The traditional pilgrimage is a test of immense physical endurance and spiritual faith. Devotees first collect the holy water of the north-flowing Ganga from Ajgaibinath Dham in Sultanganj, Bihar. From there, they embark on an arduous journey on foot, traversing approximately 105 kilometers to reach the Baba Baidyanath Jyotirlinga in Deoghar, where they perform the sacred ritual of Jalabhishek. However, for most pilgrims, the journey is only half complete at Deoghar. To fulfill their vows, they must proceed further to Baba Basukinath Dham. Under the new arrangements being introduced for the 2026 fair, this second leg of the journey will feature unprecedented comfort and security.
Key Features of the Dedicated 36km Corridor
Until recently, dedicated pedestrian pathways were only available for the initial 105-kilometer stretch from Sultanganj to Deoghar, leaving pilgrims to walk alongside heavy vehicular traffic on the regular highway when heading towards Basukinath. The National Highways Authority of India is actively working to resolve this issue by constructing a special corridor. This dedicated Kanwariya path is roughly 36 kilometers long and has a width of 3.5 meters. The construction is in its final stages, with workers rapidly laying colorful paver blocks across major segments of the route. These specialized blocks are designed to ease the physical strain on the bare feet of the marching devotees. Additionally, the project includes the establishment of permanent rest shelters along the path. These shelters will offer clean spaces for pilgrims to rest, recuperate, and recharge before resuming their spiritual march.
Separating Foot Traffic to Prevent Highway Congestion
One of the most significant advantages of this dedicated corridor is the complete separation of pedestrian pilgrims from motorized vehicles. During peak festival days, the mixing of walking devotees and moving traffic has historically led to severe traffic congestion and raised safety concerns. By routing the walking Kanwariyas onto a separate dedicated pathway, the risk of accidents is minimized, and traffic on the main road can flow smoothly. Devotees will no longer be forced to maneuver through dense traffic, allowing them to walk peacefully while chanting Bol Bam even during the crowded night hours. This structural change is expected to significantly reduce traffic jams that have historically plagued the region during the month-long Shravani Mela.
Strengthening the Broader Road Infrastructure

New bypass roads are being built around crucial traffic nodes, including Deoghar Bypass, Basukinath, Sahara, Taljhari, and Ghormara. This multi-layered road network upgrade will provide major relief to local residents, emergency services, and administrative vehicles. Ambulances and essential service vehicles will have unhindered access through these newly created bypasses, while normal passenger transport can continue with minimal delays.
