Mahant Ganeshanand Saraswati Maharaj, a revered seer associated with the Shri Panchdashnam Juna Akhada, is conducting an austere Chaturmas penance while seated atop a small wooden platform built on a Peepal tree.
Chaturmas Penance on Water and Milk for Global Welfare
Mahant Ganeshanand Saraswati Maharaj commenced his rigorous spiritual observance on the sacred day of Devshayani Ekadashi, and it will continue uninterrupted until Devuthani Ekadashi. Throughout this four-month period, the seer has completely renounced all solid food, subsisting strictly on water and small quantities of milk. The flowing Shipra River below and the view of Mahakal's holy city across the bank create a deeply spiritual setting for his intense devotion.
According to Mahant Ganeshanand Saraswati Maharaj, this severe penance is not intended for personal gain, fame, or the attainment of miraculous powers. Instead, the sole objective behind his practice is world peace and universal human welfare. Situated on his elevated wooden platform, he performs daily chanting, sacred fire rituals (Havan), and scriptural ceremonies. His sustained meditation high up in the Peepal tree reflects the ancient ascetic traditions and enduring spiritual roots of Sanatan culture.
Renunciation at Age 12 and the Path of Sanyas
Reflecting on his life journey, Mahant Ganeshanand Saraswati Maharaj shared that he has maintained a deep, lifelong connection with Madhya Pradesh. A strong sense of spiritual detachment awakened within him during early childhood. Consequently, at the young age of 12, he renounced worldly family life to walk the spiritual path.
Following traditional custom, he performed his formal Pind Daan rituals to symbolize the end of worldly ties and formally embraced the path of sanyas. He then received diksha from his guru, who bestowed upon him the monastic name Ganeshanand Saraswati. Since receiving initiation, he has remained closely affiliated with the Shri Panchdashnam Juna Akhada, dedicating his life to spiritual discipline and cultural service.
Affiliation with Bhopal Ashram and Unbroken Ramayana Recitation
Mahant Ganeshanand Saraswati Maharaj is connected to the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple and the Amravati Kala Dham Ashram located on Kolar Road in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. He revealed that an unbroken recitation of the Ramayana (Akhand Ramayana Path) has been taking place continuously at this Bhopal ashram for the past six years.
While the seer has long held a spiritual bond with Ujjain, he found the peaceful ambiance of Lakshmi Narsingh Ghat along the Shipra River exceptionally conducive to deep meditation. Inspired by the serene environment and sacred energy of the location, he resolved to spend the entire four months of Chaturmas living on the tree machan and engaging in penance.
Mythological History of Narsingh Ghat in Skanda Purana
The choice of Narsingh Ghat for this spiritual practice is anchored in ancient sacred scriptures. According to the Skanda Purana, this riverbank holds immense religious significance and is directly associated with Lord Narsingh, the fourth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Legend holds that after slaying the demon king Hiranyakashipu, Lord Narsingh remained in a state of intense, unyielding fury that threatened cosmic balance.
To pacify his fiery rage, Lord Shiva assumed the form of Sharabha and counseled Lord Narsingh to bathe in the holy waters of the Shipra River. The moment Lord Narsingh immersed himself in the Shipra, his overwhelming anger subsided completely, restoring his calm and tranquil nature. Owing to this divine legend, Narsingh Ghat is revered by pilgrims as a sacred sanctuary of peace and spiritual purification.
