India experienced a major setback on the opening day of the athletics competitions at the Commonwealth Games 2026 as national record holder Gurindervir Singh failed to advance past the preliminary heats in the men's 100m event. Competing across 11 heats, the Indian sprinter was placed 28th overall among 73 athletes. Only the 17 fastest competitors managed to progress to the next round. Gurindervir fell short of the required qualification time of 10.24 seconds by a margin of 0.15 seconds, ending his campaign prematurely.
Finished Second in Heat 4
Participating in his first-ever Commonwealth Games, the 25-year-old Gurindervir clocked 10.39 seconds to secure second place in Heat 4, finishing right behind Jamaica's Rohan Watson, who crossed the line in 10.13 seconds. While the Indian runner stayed ahead of the other competitors in his heat, his overall time proved insufficient to earn a spot in the semi-finals. Athletic authorities acknowledged his determination and commitment on the track despite the disappointing exit.
Strong Start Met With Tough Competition
Running from lane five, Gurindervir made a strong start and kept pace with Watson during the early stages of the race. However, the Jamaican sprinter, whose personal best stands at 9.91 seconds, accelerated in the final meters to secure the top spot. The race took place under a legal tailwind of 1.9 meters per second, providing favorable conditions for all the participants on the field.
Recent National Record Breakthrough
The early exit came as a surprise given the stellar momentum Gurindervir had built prior to the event. In May, the Punjab-born sprinter rewrote Indian sprinting history at the Federation Cup in Ranchi, becoming the first Indian man to break the 10.10-second barrier with a phenomenal national record of 10.09 seconds. During that record-breaking run, he first clocked 10.17 seconds in the semi-finals to eclipse Animesh Kujur's previous mark of 10.18 seconds, before improving it further in the final. That stellar performance had raised high expectations for a podium finish at the Commonwealth Games, making his debut result a tough pill to swallow.
