Indian badminton spearhead PV Sindhu commenced her campaign at the Arctic Open Super 500 tournament in Vantaa, Finland, in commanding fashion. The two-time Olympic medallist and former world champion stamped her authority on the court from the outset, dismantling Canada's Wen Yu Zhang in straight sets. Having clinched the Japan Open title earlier in July, the 31-year-old took a mere 28 minutes to secure an emphatic 21-8, 21-11 victory. In the upcoming second round, she is scheduled to face either Chinese Taipei shuttler Lin Hsiang Ti or Japan's Riko Gunji.
Tharun Mannepalli and Rounak Chouhan Advance Through Men's Qualifiers
In the men's singles qualifying draw, Indian youngsters displayed remarkable resilience to progress into the main competition. Tharun Mannepalli held his ground against second-seeded Julien Carraggi of Belgium, pulling off a hard-fought 21-12, 19-21, 21-13 win across three gripping games. Mannepalli will now clash with Magnus Johannesen of Denmark in his opening main-draw fixture. Rounak Chouhan echoed that success by mounting a spirited comeback against Israel's Daniil Dubovenko, prevailing 18-21, 21-17, 21-19 after dropping the first game. His upcoming challenge will be against China's Weng Hong Yang.
Mixed Fortunes and Early Exits for Indian Women Shuttlers
While Sindhu made quick work of her opponent, the day brought several heartbreaks for other Indian contenders in the women's draw. Malvika Bansod initially worked her way into the main draw by prevailing over Chinese Taipei's Sung Shuo Yun in a three-game qualifying contest ending 21-15, 14-21, 21-14. However, her run ended in the round of 32 against seasoned Scottish competitor Kirsty Gilmour, who took the match 21-18, 21-13 in 40 minutes.
