In Ranchi, two sisters, Gauri and Poonam, pooled their pocket money and savings to start a business that now earns an annual turnover running into crores of rupees. Their venture, Organic Affair, today employs more than 100 women.
A Risky Leap Of Faith
Gauri says the decision was not an easy one. At the time, their only source of livelihood was a single job, yet the two sisters chose to risk their savings on a new venture. Before taking the plunge, they thoroughly researched the market and discovered that demand for spices never really slows down, staying steady through every single day of the year.
Betting On Ayurvedic Herbs
Alongside spices, the sisters focused on pure powders of Ayurvedic herbs such as ashwagandha, amla, reetha, shikakai and triphala, since these too see consistent demand in the market. Poonam explains that customers often wonder whether the amla powder they are buying is genuine or has been adulterated. Questions around the authenticity of products sold in the open market have long troubled buyers.
Purity Became Their Biggest USP
The sisters put their entire focus into clearing this doubt in customers' minds. Organic Affair turned purity into its single biggest selling point. Once customers began experiencing 100% pure products and genuine results, they turned into repeat buyers. Over time, the company built a large and loyal customer base.
Rising Orders Brought 100 Women Into The Fold
As the company's reputation grew, so did the flood of orders, and handling them alone became impossible for the two sisters. That is when they started bringing in local women to help. Today, more than 100 women handle the processing and packaging work at the company, and they are given proper training for it.
Honesty As The Real Growth Formula
Poonam says with pride, "There was a time when we ourselves were looking for jobs, and today we are giving jobs to other women. Over this six year journey, our honesty has remained our biggest strength." Thanks to that honesty and hard work, the company's annual turnover has now reached crores of rupees, ranging between two and four crore rupees a year depending on market demand. For the two sisters from Ranchi, this success is a matter of pride for their family, and it has also become a big inspiration for self reliance among other women and young people in society.
