A fatal chain-reaction road collision on a national highway overbridge near Melur in Tamil Nadu's Madurai district claimed the lives of five people, including a three-year-old girl, and left two others critically injured on Monday. The tragic incident unfolded on the Thumbaipatti four-lane road overbridge as a car carrying five occupants was traveling from Chennai toward Tirunelveli. The vehicle lost control at high speed, crossed the central median divider into oncoming traffic, and smashed head-on into another automobile heading in the opposite direction, creating a devastating scene along the busy corridor.
How the Multi-Vehicle Collision Occurred
According to initial police details, the sequence of events began while the vehicle was navigating the elevated section of the highway overbridge. The Chennai-bound car first clipped or struck a two-wheeler traveling directly ahead of it in the same lane. Following this initial impact, the driver completely lost control of the automobile. The out-of-control vehicle then careened across the highway divider into the opposite traffic lane, where it collided head-on with another car traveling from Madurai toward Tiruchi. The impact of the head-on crash was so severe that the car originating from Chennai was completely crushed. Before emergency medical crews could reach the scene, all five individuals traveling inside the vehicle had succumbed to their injuries.
Identification of Chennai Family Members
Following the incident, law enforcement officers initiated efforts to identify the deceased. Police confirmed that four of the five victims belonged to a single family residing in the Madipakkam locality of Chennai. The identified victims include Sriman, Rajkumari, Ranja, and three-year-old child Pranika. Authorities noted that the identity of the fifth occupant traveling in the same car could not be immediately verified at the scene, and investigations are ongoing to establish that person's details.
Emergency Rescue Operations and Hospitalization
Upon receiving news of the crash, personnel from the Melur police station, the Fire and Rescue Services department, and the 108 Ambulance service rushed to the accident spot to execute emergency rescue efforts. Rescuers worked urgently to extricate survivors and victims from the tangled wreckages of the crushed vehicles. Two individuals who sustained critical injuries were successfully pulled out from the cars and immediately transported to the Melur Government Hospital for intensive medical treatment. Police specified that one of the injured survivors was riding in the car coming from Chennai, while the second injured victim was traveling in the Tiruchi-bound car. The bodies of the five deceased victims were subsequently moved to the government hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
