Knockoff Browser Extension Cleans Up Your Amazon Search Results

A new browser extension called Knockoff helps users hide suspicious items and pseudo-brands on Amazon. It allows you to filter out clutter and focus on reputable products.

Shopping on Amazon often feels like wading through a sea of sponsored ads and dubious items from unrecognizable brands with bizarre, randomized names. Finding genuine, trusted products requires significant effort as they often get buried deep within the search noise. To solve this, a new browser extension named Knockoff has been developed to handle the decluttering process for you. The tool either dims or completely hides listings from untrusted or obscure sellers, making it much easier to focus your attention on reputable items that are actually worth your money.

How the Knockoff Extension Functions

Available for both Chrome and Firefox, Knockoff operates by cross-referencing every product listing you encounter on Amazon against a curated database of 5,000 established brands. It specifically targets pseudo-brands—those characterized by all-caps names, unpronounceable strings of consonants, or brands that lack any identifiable presence. Depending on your personal preferences, you can configure the extension to label these listings, dim them, or remove them entirely from your view. Additionally, you can hide all sponsored listings and curate your own custom allowlist or blocklist to ensure you only see the brands you trust.

Customizable Filtering Modes

The extension offers different levels of strictness to suit your shopping habits. The "Relaxed" filter targets only the most egregious offenders and items you have manually blocked. The "Standard" setting is more aggressive, catching suspicious names and unbranded listings as well. For those who want total control, the "Strict" mode ensures that you only see products from your personal allowlist. Created by developer Josh Pigford, the extension is designed with privacy in mind. It runs locally on your device, does not require a user account, and does not track your search activity. It is completely free and open source, continuously updated based on community feedback to ensure the "safe" brand list remains accurate.

Not Every Unknown Brand is Bad

While Knockoff is highly effective at filtering out junk, it is important to remember that not every item it catches is inherently poor in quality. For instance, the extension currently blocks products from Xteink, a Chinese manufacturer of pocket e-readers that has built a loyal following lately. Because of this, it is often wiser to use the "labeled" or "dimmed" settings rather than outright blocking everything. This allows you to compare filtered items and evaluate trust signals yourself. Always check recent customer reviews, look into the seller’s profile, verify price history, and compare specifications carefully before finalizing any purchase on the platform.

What this means for you

Across India: This tool will help you filter out spam and obscure brands on Amazon India, allowing you to identify reputable products more quickly.
