Telecommunications provider Vodafone Idea (Vi) has expanded its tariff lineup in India by listing four new prepaid recharge options tailored exclusively for voice calling and text messaging. The defining characteristic of these new offerings is the total exclusion of cellular data allowances, targeting consumers who have no need for mobile internet. Introduced in compliance with recent regulatory directions from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), these plans are available on the carrier's official website with price points ranging from Rs 179 to Rs 206, featuring validity periods between 25 days and a full calendar month.
Details of the Rs 179 and Rs 189 Tariff Tiers
The entry-level option in this newly launched portfolio costs Rs 179 and carries an active service validity of 25 days. Subscribers choosing this tier receive unrestricted voice calls across domestic networks along with a total quota of 300 SMS. In addition to basic connectivity, this specific package grants complimentary access to the Vi Movies and TV application, allowing users to stream entertainment media at no extra cost.
For consumers seeking a slightly longer validity window, the Rs 189 tier provides active service for 28 days. It mirrors the core calling and messaging entitlements by delivering unlimited voice calls and a cap of 300 SMS for the entire duration. Unlike the Rs 179 option, however, the Rs 189 plan does not bundle complimentary access to the Vi Movies and TV application.
Structure of the Rs 203 and Rs 206 Offerings
Moving up the scale, the company has introduced a Rs 203 voucher specifically structured around a 30-day billing period. Customers recharging with this denomination receive unlimited voice calling privileges across India alongside the standard pool of 300 text messages.
The highest-priced voucher in this data-free lineup is set at Rs 206, which provides validity covering an entire calendar month. It supplies customers with uninterrupted voice connectivity and 300 SMS. Consistent with the other mid-tier voice offerings, the Rs 206 option excludes complimentary access to the Vi Movies and TV streaming catalog.
Regulatory Mandate Issued by TRAI
The introduction of these specialized tariff structures stems from an official directive issued by TRAI on September 21. Through this notification, the regulatory body mandated telecom operators to roll out dedicated special tariff vouchers (STVs) that cater purely to voice calling and SMS delivery, completely unbundled from internet connectivity.
The regulator highlighted that lower-income households, particularly individuals living in rural communities and those operating basic feature phones, often find standard bundled packs prohibitively expensive. Forcing data allowances onto non-data users creates an unwanted financial strain. Under the regulatory framework, these monthly vouchers must maintain consistent renewal dates each month; in months that lack that exact numerical date, the subscription must renew on the final calendar day.
Comparison with Existing Airtel Options
Prior to Vodafone Idea's deployment of these options, Bharti Airtel complied with the same regulatory framework by introducing three voice-centric prepaid tiers. Airtel's catalogue features plans priced at Rs 189, Rs 203, and Rs 206, providing validity windows and benefits identical to Vi's corresponding offerings. Consequently, users across both networks now have access to virtually indistinguishable pricing and feature sets when seeking calling-only recharge alternatives.
