Centre Releases Over Rs 1.09 Lakh Crore in Tax Devolution to States With UP Bagging Highest Share

The central government has transferred an advance tax devolution instalment of Rs 1,09,019 crore to state governments ahead of the festive season. Uttar Pradesh received the largest allocation of Rs 19,208 crore, followed by Bihar at Rs 10,845 crore.

Ahead of the upcoming festive season, the central government has disbursed an additional tax devolution instalment amounting to Rs 1,09,019 crore to state governments across the country. This allocation marks the second advance release during the current financial year and comes over and above the regular monthly transfers that states routinely receive. The step follows robust domestic economic activity and sustained tax revenue collections across central coffers.

Boost for Infrastructure and Welfare Initiatives

Sharing details on social media platform X, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that releasing these funds will directly assist states in speeding up infrastructure development, securing finances for public welfare programmes, and supporting overall economic growth nationwide. A significant component of the distributed amount comes from collected GST, ensuring that states receive their constitutional allocation to sustain broad-based development.

The timing of the release is aimed at easing liquidity pressures during the high-demand festival period. By boosting capital expenditure through this timely transfer, state administrations can accelerate civic and social projects, satisfy local commitments, and stimulate wider consumer demand throughout regional markets.

The Framework Governing Central Tax Devolution

Under the existing federal fiscal framework, 41 percent of the divisible net tax proceeds collected by the central government throughout a financial year is distributed among the states across 14 instalments. A major element of this revenue pool comprises IGST, which is levied on cross-border transactions involving imports and exports. These revenues are initially deposited into the central exchequer before being divided and transferred according to established devolution criteria.

State-Wise Breakdown of Disbursed Funds

Uttar Pradesh secured the largest single entitlement in this distribution cycle, receiving Rs 19,208 crore. Bihar received the second-highest sum at Rs 10,845 crore. The breakdown of funds provided to other recipient states includes

  • Madhya Pradesh has been allocated Rs 8,010 crore.
