A large number of WhatsApp users across India faced sudden disruptions on Monday as their messaging accounts were locked and placed under a 24 hour review period. This unexpected restriction prevented people from accessing essential features of the popular communication platform. The issue first surfaced around 8 PM on Monday, leaving users stranded without any prior warning as their profiles were flagged under review status.
The sudden enforcement action caused widespread panic and confusion among individuals across the country. Frustrated by the abrupt disruption, affected users immediately turned to social media platforms to voice their complaints, share their predicament, and seek answers regarding why such strict measures were suddenly taken against their accounts.
As users attempted to open the application on Monday night, they were greeted by an in app notification stating that their account was currently under evaluation and that their messaging activities along with associated device details were being checked. The notification further informed them that a final decision regarding the account status would be delivered within a 24 hour window.
In addition to the review notice, the application displayed guidelines reminding individuals to use the service responsibly alongside options related to compromised or stolen accounts. Several affected individuals expressed their anger on the social media platform X. One user pointed out that their profile was shut down for no apparent reason, noting that even after submitting an appeal, the interface continued to display a generic message.
Another impacted person highlighted that their daily professional work depends entirely on WhatsApp, making an unannounced block a severe crisis. When approached for a statement regarding the incident, a WhatsApp spokesperson explained that they constantly monitor accounts that attempt to misuse the service, taking action to protect the safety of the wider community. However, the spokesperson also acknowledged that errors can occasionally occur, adding that the company works quickly to rectify such mistakes so users can resume normal communication.
