Harriet Dart ends 19-month Grand Slam drought with stunning US Open comeback

Britain's Harriet Dart secured her first Grand Slam singles win in 19 months by fighting back from a set and a break down to defeat Peyton Stearns in the US Open first round.

British tennis player Harriet Dart ended a 19-month wait for a Grand Slam singles victory by staging an impressive comeback to defeat American opponent Peyton Stearns in the opening round of the US Open. World number 131 Dart had not triumphed in a main-draw singles match at a major tournament since she reached the second round of the Australian Open. The 30-year-old athlete had previously failed to qualify for four out of the next six Grand Slam events and fell at the very first hurdle during the past two editions of Wimbledon after accepting wildcards.

Overcoming Early Struggles and Tough Qualifying

The journey to the main draw in New York was far from straightforward for the British competitor. She was forced into three sets across all three of her qualifying matches, which included dropping the opening set against Kristina Penickova and Heather Watson. Once the main tournament commenced, Dart once again found herself taking the difficult route. Facing American player Peyton Stearns, who holds a ranking more than 75 places higher, Dart fell behind by a set and a break before staging a remarkable turnaround to triumph 3-6 6-3 6-2.

Turning Point and Decisive Momentum

Early in the contest, Dart was left to regret missing four separate break point opportunities during the opening game of the match, after which Stearns denied her any further openings in that first set. Stearns maintained relentless pressure on the Briton's serve and successfully broke in the eighth game. Although Dart was broken for a second time at the start of the second set, her opponent's game grew increasingly erratic. Stearns racked up 40 winners but offset them with 47 unforced errors, allowing Dart to secure two crucial breaks and force a deciding third set.

Securing the Victory and Next Challenge

Taking firm control of the match midway through the third set, Dart completed a vital service hold in the sixth game to break a sequence of three consecutive breaks. She eventually converted her fourth match point to seal a tense victory in a little under two and a half hours. With this win, Dart joins compatriots Toby Samuel and Katie Boulter in the second round, where she is scheduled to face 25th seed Marie Bouzkova.
