In a significant relief for passengers travelling between the Indian capital and Canada, Air India has announced a major upgrade to its Delhi-Toronto route. Starting August 1, 2026, the airline will eliminate the technical layover in Vienna, transforming the outbound journey into a direct, non-stop flight. This strategic scheduling change is set to shave approximately three hours off the total travel time, bringing the journey down from a taxing 20 hours to a much more manageable 17 hours. Passengers heading back from Toronto to Delhi already enjoy a non-stop service, meaning round-trip flyers will now experience seamless connectivity in both directions.
Overcoming Airspace Challenges
While the non-stop flight is a welcome development, it is not an entirely new offering from the airline. Air India had previously operated direct flights between Delhi and Toronto. However, geopolitical complications, specifically the closure of Pakistani airspace, forced the carrier to adopt a considerably longer flight path. The extended route significantly increased fuel consumption, compelling the airline to introduce a mandatory technical stop in Vienna, Austria, simply to refuel the aircraft before crossing the Atlantic. Now, by deploying a more capable aircraft, the airline is finally able to bypass this European pitstop entirely.
Daily Operations and Upgraded Fleet
Alongside the faster travel time, Air India is also restoring the frequency of its services on this crucial North American sector. During the months of June and July 2026, soaring aviation fuel costs and ongoing geopolitical uncertainties prompted the airline to scale back operations, reducing the Delhi-Toronto frequency to just five days a week. Effective August 1, the carrier will reinstate daily flights, ensuring passengers have the flexibility to travel any day of the week.
Facilitating this upgraded non-stop service is the deployment of Air India's newly inducted Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. This modern aircraft not only possesses the range required for the extended non-stop journey but also introduces a revamped cabin layout. The Dreamliner will feature 30 Business class suites, 28 Premium Economy seats, and 238 standard Economy seats. Notably, this marks the very first time travelers on the Delhi-Toronto route will have the option to book a Premium Economy ticket, bridging the gap in comfort and price between the standard and business cabins.

The introduction of the new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner promises a vastly superior in-flight experience. Travelers can expect a thoroughly modernized cabin environment equipped with top-tier amenities.
