Indian Railways continues to expand its extensive network and upgrade passenger amenities across various routes. Prior to the introduction of bullet trains, semi-high-speed Vande Bharat services have been rolled out in different parts of the country. Initially launched in chair car configurations, the network later expanded to include sleeper versions, starting with the route between Kamakhya and Howrah. Now, preparations are fully underway to launch a Vande Bharat Sleeper train connecting the nation's capital, Delhi, with the holy city of Varanasi. Set to debut ahead of Diwali and Chhath Puja, the service is scheduled to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 31, 2026.
A Luxurious and Modern Travel Experience
The rail journey between Delhi and Varanasi is poised to become significantly more comfortable, exciting, and opulent. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the sleeper version of the Delhi-Varanasi Vande Bharat train on October 31, 2026. This service stands out not only for its impressive speed but also for its superior passenger amenities. Equipped with automatic doors, mobile and laptop charging ports, and a host of other ultra-modern facilities, the train resembles a five-star hotel moving on tracks. While its maximum design speed reaches up to 180 kilometers per hour, its operational speed is maintained at 160 kilometers per hour.
Journey Duration Based on Operating Speeds
Spanning a geographical distance of roughly 800 to 820 kilometers between Delhi and Varanasi, the travel time will vary depending on the train's running speed. If operated at its peak speed of 180 KMPH, the journey between the two cities can be completed in just 4 to 4.5 hours. Operating at a speed of 160 KMPH will reduce the travel time to around 5.25 hours, while running at 140 or 130 KMPH would extend the duration to approximately 6 to 6.5 hours. It is worth noting that a chair car version of the Vande Bharat train is already operational between these two destinations.
A Fresh Overnight Travel Option for Commuters
Passengers traveling between Varanasi and New Delhi will soon gain a convenient new alternative for overnight journeys. The sleeper Vande Bharat Express on this route is expected to commence operations starting October 31. Unlike the existing chair car configurations, this new train features air-conditioned sleeper coaches that allow passengers to lie down rather than sit throughout the night. This arrangement is designed to provide greater comfort for long-distance travelers, enabling them to rest comfortably and arrive in Delhi by early morning.
Proposed Timetable and Route Schedule
According to circulating reports, train number 27421 is slated to depart from Varanasi for New Delhi at 8:50 PM. The proposed schedule indicates that the train will reach Prayagraj at 10:35 PM, departing after a brief five-minute halt at 10:40 PM. It is then scheduled to arrive at Kanpur Central at 12:20 AM and leave at 12:45 AM, ultimately pulling into New Delhi at 6:55:00 AM the following morning. This proposed timing allows passengers to complete an overnight journey and reach the national capital just in time for the start of the day.
For the return trip, train number 27422 is projected to leave New Delhi at 9:40 PM. It is expected to reach Prayagraj at 4:45 AM the next day, resuming its journey at 4:50 AM after a five-minute stop, and arriving in Varanasi by 6:45 AM. However, these timings are currently based on details circulating in media reports and require formal confirmation from railway authorities before being finalized.
Coach Composition and Passenger Capacity
The proposed Varanasi-New Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper Express is expected to feature a total of 16 LHB air-conditioned coaches. To cater to varying passenger requirements, the configuration is proposed to include AC1, AC2, and AC3 classes. Reports suggest the composition may comprise one First AC coach, four Second AC coaches, and eleven Third AC coaches, bringing the total estimated passenger capacity to around 823 travelers per trip.
Despite the approaching launch date, the railway administration has not yet released official details regarding ticket pricing, reservation protocols, or complete stoppages. Current proposals primarily reference Varanasi, Prayagraj, Kanpur Central, and New Delhi. While ticket bookings are rumored to open around October 27 ahead of the October 31 launch, travelers are advised to verify all details through official railway reservation channels before making concrete travel plans.
