Agartala is set to transition its urban power distribution infrastructure beneath the surface, removing the clutter of overhead electrical lines across the municipal zone. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha laid the foundation stone on Thursday for the ambitious Rs 1,437 crore Agartala Underground Cabling Project. The launch took place during a Bhumi Pujan ceremony held at the Bardowali Higher Secondary School Ground, where he also rolled out the Utility-Led Aggregation initiative operating under the rooftop solar programme.
Targeted Completion by 2028 with Three Executing Agencies
The extensive engineering venture focuses entirely on substituting the existing overhead power network with resilient subterranean cables throughout the Agartala Municipal Corporation area. According to Chief Minister Manik Saha, authorities have established 2028 as the completion deadline for the initiative. To ensure execution remains on schedule across different zones, three distinct agencies have been formally assigned the responsibility of carrying out the installation work.
Mitigating Storm Outages and Enhancing City Safety
Switching from overhead wires to underground conduits directly tackles recurring distribution failures across the state capital. Severe storms routinely topple trees and snap overhead conductors, plunging residential and commercial neighbourhoods into prolonged blackouts. Subsurface lines eliminate tree-fall vulnerabilities while significantly curbing urban fire hazards and hazardous live-wire exposure for pedestrians. The project will also clamp down on unauthorized power tapping and electricity theft, alongside elevating the visual aesthetics of the cityscape by doing away with dangling wire clusters.
Smart Grid Monitoring and Trenchless Drilling Methods
Modern electrical engineering mechanisms are integrated into the grid architecture. Advanced smart grid technology supported by a dedicated smart control room will enable engineers to track transmission dynamics and manage disruptions through real-time operational monitoring. To prevent road disruptions during installation, contractors will deploy modern Horizontal Directional Drilling methods. This trenchless excavation approach allows underground conduits to be placed beneath roads without digging up entire street lengths, avoiding commuter congestion and preserving local thoroughfares.
Integrated Planning Through Utility Aggregation
Complementing the power transmission revamp, the newly introduced Utility-Led Aggregation framework aims to synchronize broader urban utility infrastructure development throughout Agartala. Launched under the state rooftop solar initiative, this mechanism seeks coordinated management among civic utility networks. Highlighting the broader municipal transformation in a post on X, the Chief Minister affirmed that the subterranean transition will safeguard supply consistency, curb illegal theft, and contribute substantially to Agartala's civic modernization.
