Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has issued a stern warning against Delhi-based digital creator Amir Shokeen following allegations of racial abuse directed at a young person from Tripura. Addressing the controversy that has sparked widespread indignation, the minister made it clear that law enforcement agencies will not overlook the misconduct simply because there was a delay in lodging a formal complaint. He underscored that the police forces of both jurisdictions will ensure the offender faces decisive consequences under the law.
Viral Video Sparks Widespread Outrage Across the Northeast
The incident came to light after a clip circulated heavily across social media networks, purportedly capturing Shokeen making derogatory, racially motivated remarks against the Tripura native. The footage triggered immediate and intense public anger, particularly throughout the northeastern states. Citizens and political figures alike voiced deep concern over persistent regional discrimination, condemning the use of hateful rhetoric against individuals based on their geographic origins and ethnic identity.
Tolerance of Wicked Behaviour Fuels Hatred: Minister
Taking to social media to register his condemnation, Kiren Rijiju wrote on X that those who overlook such hostility share responsibility for poisoning public discourse. Emphasising accountability, he stated,
"There was delay in lodging the official complaint but Delhi Police and Tripura Police will teach him a hard lesson."The minister noted that letting such blatant harassment pass without legal repercussions only emboldens offenders and damages societal harmony, making swift police intervention imperative.
State Administration and Youth Groups Initiate Legal Proceedings
In response to the escalating outcry, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha intervened by directing the state Director General of Police (DGP) to maintain close contact with the Delhi Police. The Chief Minister confirmed that appropriate legal measures would be executed without delay to address the grievance.
Concurrently, institutional pressure has mounted on the ground. The Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), representing the youth wing of the Tipra Motha Party, formally lodged a police complaint on Wednesday with the Officer-in-Charge at Agartala's NCC Police Station. The complaint accuses Shokeen of racial harassment, defamation, and targeting an indigenous youth from the state. The organisation demanded the immediate registration of an FIR invoking pertinent sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) along with the Information Technology Act, 2000. Furthermore, the federation urged investigators to partner closely with cybercrime divisions and Delhi Police personnel to conduct a thorough and transparent probe.
