A domestic dispute in the Gujaini area of Kanpur turned tragic when a 20-year-old woman flung her 14-month-old daughter and subsequently jumped off the second floor of their house, shortly after celebrating her wedding anniversary. Fortunately, the toddler survived without harm after her alert father swiftly caught her in his arms before she could hit the ground. The mother suffered catastrophic injuries from the fall and succumbed to them on Sunday morning after battling for her life in the hospital for two days.
Anniversary Gathering Followed by Late-Night Argument
The incident occurred in the Mardanpur locality under the jurisdiction of the Gujaini police station. Noor Alam, a tailor by profession, lived there with his 20-year-old wife Roshni and their 14-month-old daughter. The couple had tied the knot three years ago and was celebrating their third marriage anniversary on October 7. Roshni's elder sister, Ishrat, had also arrived at their home to take part in the family festivities. Together, the family members cut a cake, enjoyed dinner, and celebrated the occasion.
However, late into the night, an intense verbal argument erupted between Noor Alam and Ishrat over an undisclosed domestic issue. Upset by the altercation, Ishrat decided to leave the house immediately. Roshni pleaded with her elder sister to stay, but when Ishrat refused to listen and continued walking out, Roshni grew intensely agitated and distressed.
Toddler Rescued Mid-Air Before Mother Jumped
Overwhelmed by anger and distress, Roshni picked up her 14-month-old daughter and hurled her inside the house. Standing right in front, Noor Alam displayed remarkable presence of mind and managed to catch the infant safely before she hit the floor. Before anyone could intervene further, Roshni rushed to the second floor of the building and leaped down.
The sudden turn of events triggered panic across the neighbourhood. Family members immediately rushed both the mother and the infant to a nearby private medical facility. While examining doctors confirmed that the baby girl was completely out of danger, Roshni had sustained critical internal and skeletal injuries due to the impact of the fall.
Treatment at Hallet Hospital and Subsequent Death
Given the deteriorating condition of the injured woman following initial emergency treatment, physicians referred Roshni to Hallet Hospital on October 9 for intensive care. Medical teams kept her under continuous observation while the family hoped for her recovery. Nevertheless, her condition failed to stabilise, and doctors pronounced her dead on Sunday morning, leaving both families in deep grief.
Upon receiving notification of the fatality, the Gujaini police intervened and took custody of the body for legal proceedings. Initially, both families were reluctant to permit a post-mortem examination. However, they consented after police personnel counselled them regarding standard legal protocols in cases of unnatural death.
Police Await Formal Complaint
Gujaini Station House Officer Rajan Sharma stated that the body has been transferred for an autopsy examination. The officer noted that the police department has not yet received an official written complaint or petition from the relatives. Authorities confirmed that further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident will proceed once an official complaint is lodged, followed by appropriate legal action.
