Voter turnout surged as polling concluded across four states for one Lok Sabha constituency and five assembly seats. While voters turned out in large numbers in Bengal and Assam, the by-elections in the Nandigram and Rejinagar constituencies of West Bengal generated intense political heat. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remained completely absent from the scene, while the Congress and local leader Humayun Kabir, who styles himself as Bengal's Owaisi, triggered an uproar by alleging vote theft and booth capturing, demanding fresh polling. Meanwhile, in Delhi, Rahul Gandhi and allies from the opposition bloc raised concerns alleging widespread vote tampering. In Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party and Congress found themselves entangled in internal discord regarding seat-sharing arrangements ahead of their bid to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party.
AIMIM Sets Sights on 200 Uttar Pradesh Assembly Seats
Amid the growing friction between potential coalition partners, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi has stepped up his electoral moves in Uttar Pradesh, adding fresh complications for Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav. Akhilesh Yadav had already appeared on the back foot following the Rajya Sabha election developments, and Owaisi's aggressive stance introduces further disruption to his calculations. The formal deadline that Owaisi had presented to both the Samajwadi Party and Congress to finalize a joint electoral pact elapsed on 2 October. With no formal understanding reached by that date, Owaisi initiated preparations to contest the state elections independently.
Internal planning indicates that Owaisi intends to field candidates across at least 200 assembly constituencies throughout Uttar Pradesh. Notably, around 100 of these selected constituencies are located in Muslim-dominated areas. This calculated footprint poses a direct challenge to the traditional voter base that the Samajwadi Party typically relies upon in high-stakes assembly battles.
Focus on Disgruntled Leaders and a Conditional Alliance Offer
As part of this electoral blueprint, Owaisi is actively planning to offer party tickets to Muslim leaders who find themselves sidelined or denied nominations by Akhilesh Yadav. By accommodating candidates whose tickets get dropped by the Samajwadi Party, the party aims to establish viable alternatives on the ground. Concurrently, Owaisi has reiterated an offer of an alliance to Akhilesh Yadav, while issuing a firm caveat that extending such an offer should never be misinterpreted as political vulnerability or weakness on his part.
Rally in Shravasti and Critique of Political Rivals
Addressing a public gathering in Shravasti, Owaisi took sharp aim at his political adversaries by referencing public comments left on his Instagram posts. Responding playfully yet sharply to social media commentary labeling him obsessed with his wife, Owaisi embraced the phrase to launch a multifaceted attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and Akhilesh Yadav.
Speaking to the crowd, Owaisi shared that users across India frequently message him saying he speaks excessively about his spouse, with some commenting that he has turned crazy for his wife. Owaisi asked the men in the audience to raise their hands if they were married. Addressing the gathering directly, he remarked, "We certainly are crazy about our wives, and we say so with pride." He then contrasted his personal stance with the political conduct of his rivals, stating that unlike Modi, Baba, and Akhilesh, he does not make fools of the people of Uttar Pradesh and the nation.
