Aonla assembly constituency in Bareilly district stands out as one of the most keenly tracked political battlegrounds across Uttar Pradesh. An examination of the past eight general assembly elections reveals an overwhelming dominance by the Bharatiya Janata Party. However, the political landscape in Aonla has entered a new phase following the nomination of incumbent legislator Dharampal Singh to the Rajya Sabha. With Singh moving to the upper house of parliament, the BJP will have to field a brand-new face for the upcoming 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.
On the opposing side, the Samajwadi Party is determined to halt the BJP juggernaut. While the BJP is gearing up to secure a fourth consecutive victory in the seat, the Samajwadi Party hopes to reclaim a constituency it last won more than three decades ago. The demographic composition of Aonla makes it particularly competitive, with significant concentrations of Muslim voters, Scheduled Caste (SC) communities, Rajputs, and various Other Backward Class (OBC) groups whose collective mobilization dictates the final outcome.
Shyam Bihari Singh Secured a Hat-Trick for BJP in 1991
The constituency's modern electoral narrative began in 1991, when Shyam Bihari Singh clinched his third consecutive victory on a BJP ticket. Singh defeated Janata Dal nominee Mahipal Singh Yadav by a margin of 6,960 votes. The final tally saw Shyam Bihari Singh securing 26,647 votes against Mahipal Singh Yadav's 19,687 votes. The Congress party's candidate, Kalyan Singh, finished in third place after garnering just 13,031 votes.
SP-BSP Alliance Halted the Saffron Run in 1993
The saffron party's winning streak came to an abrupt halt in the 1993 assembly elections. Contesting in an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party, the Samajwadi Party fielded Mahipal Singh Yadav, who successfully dethroned Shyam Bihari Singh. Yadav polled 46,119 votes, defeating Singh by a margin of 6,601 votes as the BJP candidate settled for 39,518 votes. The Congress once again stood third, with its candidate Uman Lata Singh securing 19,994 votes.
Dharampal Singh Marked BJP's Decisive Comeback in 1996
The Samajwadi Party's control over Aonla proved short-lived. In the 1996 assembly elections, Dharampal Singh spearheaded the BJP's resurgence by handing a crushing defeat to Mahipal Singh Yadav. Singh secured 51,985 votes, creating an imposing margin of 21,262 votes over Yadav, who could manage only 30,723 votes. The Congress retained third spot with Atul Sharma securing 24,784 votes, while independent candidate Munne Khan also made an impression with 12,426 votes.
A Nail-Biting 2002 Contest Decided by Just 263 Votes
Among all assembly contests held between 1991 and 2022, the 2002 election proved to be the most nail-biting encounter. Official data from the Election Commission of India shows that Dharampal Singh retained the seat by a razor-thin margin of just 263 votes. Singh secured 43,345 votes to edge out Samajwadi Party's Shyam Bihari Singh, who closely trailed with 43,082 votes. The Bahujan Samaj Party's candidate Bulakiram Maurya complicated the race further by drawing 29,704 votes.
BSP's Statewide Wave Clinched Aonla for the First Time in 2007
The 2007 election saw the Bahujan Samaj Party sweep Uttar Pradesh to form a majority government, and Aonla rode that wave as well. BSP candidate Radha Krishna won the seat for the party for the first time, defeating Samajwadi Party candidate Bulakiram Maurya by a margin of 9,379 votes. Radha Krishna polled 40,129 votes compared to Maurya's 30,750 votes. Dharampal Singh slipped to third position with 29,291 votes, while Ittehad-e-Millat Council candidate Rishi Pal Singh, backed by Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, polled 11,464 votes.
Dharampal Singh Weathered the SP Wave in 2012
Even when the Samajwadi Party swept across Uttar Pradesh to form the government in 2012, Dharampal Singh managed to wrest Aonla back into the BJP fold. In an intense three-cornered contest, Singh gathered 50,782 votes to defeat SP's Mahipal Singh Yadav by 4,408 votes. Yadav finished with 46,374 votes, while BSP candidate Sajid Ali Khan claimed third place with a formidable 41,082 votes. The Congress candidate, Anupama Maurya, was relegated to fourth place with 15,715 votes.
BJP Retained Aonla in 2017 Triangular Battle
The 2017 election brought another close three-way fight in which Dharampal Singh emerged victorious once more. Singh secured 63,165 votes to overcome Samajwadi Party candidate Siddharaj Singh, who collected 59,619 votes, resulting in a narrow victory margin of 3,546 votes. BSP candidate Agam Kumar Maurya mounted a strong challenge with 54,192 votes. Because the Samajwadi Party and Congress contested that election in an alliance, the Congress did not field a candidate in Aonla.
A Third Consecutive Win for Dharampal Singh in 2022
In the 2022 assembly elections, Dharampal Singh completed a personal hat-trick of consecutive victories. He garnered 88,956 votes, defeating Samajwadi Party candidate Pandit Radha Krishna Sharma by a comprehensive margin of 18,424 votes after Sharma was halted at 70,532 votes. The BSP finished a distant third, with its candidate Laxman Prasad polling 18,773 votes.
Historical Takeaways and Calculations for the 2027 Battle
Across the eight assembly elections held between 1991 and 2022, the BJP has emerged victorious on six occasions, while the SP and BSP have managed just one win apiece. The Congress party has failed to win the seat even once during this entire span. On an individual level, Dharampal Singh stands as the most decorated candidate in Aonla's history, having won the seat five times in 1996, 2002, 2012, 2017, and 2022. The largest margin of victory in these decades was Singh's 21,262-vote triumph in 1996, whereas the narrowest was his 263-vote scrape in 2002.
Looking ahead to the 2027 assembly elections, the contest is poised to pit the BJP against a potential SP-Congress alliance. When Congress contested independently in 2022, its candidate Omveer garnered only 2,306 votes. However, voting patterns in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections offer a critical preview: contesting in alliance within the Bareilly parliamentary segment, the BJP's Dharmendra Kashyap led the Samajwadi Party's Neeraj Maurya in the Aonla assembly segment by 8,488 votes. This lead represented a contraction of roughly 10,000 votes compared to the BJP's 2022 assembly margin. With the BJP needing a new nominee and the margin tightening, the 2027 election is likely to be decided by candidate selection and careful caste coalition building.
