A major crackdown on unlicensed firecracker stockpiles was carried out in the Ghatampur area of Kanpur district, Uttar Pradesh. Acting on intelligence regarding illegal storage in crowded commercial areas, police squads raided multiple shops across Patara town and Nauranga village. The operation uncovered approximately 110 kilograms of firecrackers stashed across four shops without the mandatory safety clearances or permits. The stock was seized on the spot, an offense was registered under the Explosives Act, and three individuals were taken into custody for questioning.
Targeted Raids Across Patara and Nauranga
The surprise operation unfolded on Monday afternoon when police teams arrived in Patara town. Searches were conducted at shops owned by Rajesh Sahu and Hariom Saini, uncovering around 71 kilograms of commercially packed firecrackers stashed inside their premises. Concurrently, another team moved to Nauranga village to inspect the premises of Shravan Kumar, also known as Raju, where an additional 39 kilograms of crackers were found stored without authorization. When asked to produce valid licenses, storage permits, or purchase documentation, none of the shopkeepers could present any lawful papers. Officers subsequently seized the combined stock under official seizure memos.
Tracing the Origin and Distribution Chain
Ghatampur Inspector Manoj Singh Bhadauria stated that specific intelligence regarding unauthorized hoarding prompted coordinated deployments across the identified locations. The total recovered stock reached roughly 110 kilograms, representing a significant volume of combustible material kept in open violation of storage norms. Authorities are interrogating the three detained individuals to establish the broader logistics network behind the consignment. Investigators are tracing where the stock was procured, the suppliers involved in transporting it into the district, and the specific retail outlets or local buyers it was intended for.
Enforcement Drive and Public Safety Warnings
Ghatampur ACP Krishnakant affirmed that a dedicated enforcement drive is actively underway across the circle to root out the unauthorized trade and stockpiling of explosives. He pointed out that storing commercial explosives inside residential or market pockets presents severe hazards. Any accidental fire or blast in such crowded setups could result in extensive damage to property and risk human lives. The police department appealed to local residents and village communities to report any suspicious stockpiling of firecrackers in their neighborhoods immediately, assuring that inspection teams will take prompt legal action to maintain public safety.
