The main entrance of Mohtaj Khana Colony in the Salarganj neighborhood of Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, has turned into a major safety hazard for commuters. A large drain structure positioned directly at the entrance of the colony has remained exposed for the past six months after its concrete cover stone broke apart. As a key transit point, thousands of local residents, commuters, and school children navigate this perilous stretch every day. Without any protective barriers or warning signs, the open pit continues to cause frequent accidents, creating severe panic among daily road users.
Daily Commute Hazards for Pedestrians and Vehicle Operators
The main connecting road of Mohtaj Khana Colony sees heavy foot and vehicular traffic from early morning until late at night. Young children, women, senior citizens, and daily commuters are forced to walk right beside this dangerous opening. Due to the missing drain cover, pedestrians frequently slip and fall into the cavity, sustaining painful injuries. The hazardous condition presents an even greater risk for two-wheeler riders and three-wheeler operators. Motorcycles frequently lose balance when coming across the sudden drop, leading to serious falls and injuries for riders. Furthermore, local e-rickshaws carrying passengers have repeatedly gotten stuck in the hole and overturned, leaving multiple passengers injured.
Atal Park Beautification versus Ground Reality of Municipal Neglect
Local residents have highlighted a glaring contradiction in the efforts of the municipal administration. Nearby, the authorities recently developed and inaugurated Atal Park in an adjacent field to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the neighborhood. However, while public funds were spent on park beautification, the dangerously dilapidated drain right beside the park has been completely ignored. This sharp contrast between a newly built recreation spot and an unattended open hazard has raised serious doubts regarding the priorities of the local Nagar Palika. Navigating the path is challenging enough during daylight as people jump over the gap, but the situation becomes exceptionally dangerous after sunset. Due to inadequate street lighting along the road, the gaping pit remains invisible in the dark, posing an ongoing threat of fatal accidents.
Community Outrage Over Administrative Inaction and Immediate Demands
Frustrated by the ongoing safety crisis, residents of Salarganj and Mohtaj Khana Colony stated that they have repeatedly brought the issue to the notice of responsible municipal officials. Despite numerous complaints and requests, the administration has failed to initiate any repair work or install a replacement slab over the drain. Citizens expressed deep concern that authorities appear to be waiting for a major disaster before taking action. The local community has urgently demanded that municipal authorities repair the damaged concrete structure immediately and cover the drain properly, ensuring safety for thousands of daily commuters.
