Candles are often perceived as a basic, low-scale product restricted to just one or two traditional formats in local markets. Overturning that assumption, participants in this initiative are producing intricate, contemporary pieces designed to establish financial independence and self reliance.
Surging Demand for Decorative Candles During the Festive Season
As the festival of Diwali draws closer, the need for candles and earthen lamps peaks across households, commercial centers, and cultural venues. Recognizing this seasonal opportunity, the workshop equips attendees with the skills to shape candles into flowers, couple figures, spheres, and various other creative structures. These specialty items are not only suited for physical retail outlets but also command premium prices across online marketplaces. Mastering diverse design techniques gives differently abled individuals the means to strengthen their financial security and stand as confident pillars in society.
Challenging the Perception of a Low Margin Trade
For those enrolled in the sessions, the practical lessons have reshaped their understanding of candle production and commercial viability. Sharing her experience, participant Rahmani explained that she previously viewed candles as a single, uniform product, but seeing and crafting a multitude of styles by hand broadened her perspective entirely. While she once assumed candles were strictly low-cost items with modest returns, the hands-on practice revealed the significant profit margins and savings that can be realized through thoughtful production.
Utilizing Specialty Wax and Gel for Commercial Venues
Explaining the technical methodology behind the craft, trainer Kusum Kashyap noted that diverse formulations of wax and gel are being employed to teach various decorative patterns to the learners. She emphasized that mastering these creations offers a practical springboard for launching an independent venture. Designer candles enjoy consistent patronage among churches, hotels, and restaurants, where they fetch premium prices. An added advantage of this enterprise is durability, as finished candles do not spoil over time during storage, eliminating the threat of stock decay or financial losses.
Self Employment and E-Commerce Skills at Sheikhpura Qadeem
The specialized program is currently underway in the village of Sheikhpura Qadeem. Amit Kumar Choubey outlined that the initiative is being conducted by the Punjab National Bank Rural Self Employment Training Institute in partnership with Enable India. The primary objective is to link differently abled persons directly to self employment so they never feel destitute or unsupported. Pointing out India's cultural and spiritual heritage, he noted the continuous market demand for lamps and candles. Attendees can comfortably manufacture these items right from their homes, and the curriculum specifically incorporates training on listing and selling goods online to maximize their reach.
