A tragic road crash occurred on the Kanpur-Sagar Highway in the Bidhnu police station area of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on the morning of October 2, claiming the life of a science teacher and leaving several students and educators injured. The collision involved a speeding dumper loaded with grit and a bus belonging to Cheena Public School. The incident unfolded near Harbaspur village while the school vehicle was ferrying passengers to a school program organized for Gandhi Jayanti. The intensity of the impact shattered the bus windows, scattering glass splinters inside and causing immediate panic and screams among the occupants.
Journey to Ghatampur for Gandhi Jayanti Celebrations
Cheena Public School, located on Musanagar Road in Ghatampur, had organized commemorative festivities to mark Gandhi Jayanti. To participate in these scheduled events, teachers and pupils boarded the school bus early in the morning. Around 35 individuals, including five students, were traveling inside the vehicle. The bus was being driven by Arjun, a resident of Barra. According to Arjun, he was navigating the route from Naubasta toward the school when he spotted a fast-moving, sand-laden dumper approaching dangerously from the opposite direction near Harbaspur village.
Evasive Maneuvers Failed to Avert the Crash
Driver Arjun explained that as soon as he saw the incoming dumper heading directly toward them, he attempted to steer the bus off the paved highway onto the shoulder to prevent an accident. Despite his efforts to clear the path, the dumper violently struck the side of the bus and heavily damaged its rear section as well. The abrupt, heavy crash jolted everyone inside the vehicle. Neither the teachers nor the young pupils had any time to brace themselves, leading to sheer panic and distress across the passenger cabin.
Fatal Injuries Caused by Shattered Window Panes
Science teacher Aishwarya Srivastava, who was seated near a window toward the rear of the bus, sustained fatal injuries during the impact. The violent collision caused the window glass beside her to shatter completely, and sharp shards penetrated her head. Accompanying staff members rushed her immediately to the Bidhnu Community Health Centre for emergency medical attention. However, attending doctors examined her and declared her brought dead. Aishwarya Srivastava was the daughter of Pawan Srivastava and lived in the Barra area. News of her sudden demise brought profound grief to her family and colleagues.
Glass Splinter Enters Student's Eye, Two Referred to District Hospital
The flying glass shards also caused severe injuries to Seventh Grade student Raunak Verma, who suffered glass penetration in his eye. Raunak is a resident of Bingawan. Other students traveling on the bus included his brother Kanishk from Class 5, Maitri from Class 5 (resident of Naubasta), Suhani from Class 11 (resident of Galla Mandi), and Kushagra from Class 10 (resident of Machharia). Among the faculty, 37-year-old teacher Anju Reeta from Taudhakpur and 30-year-old teacher Himanshu Yadav, son of the late SP Yadav and resident of Juhi Lal Colony, were injured. Following preliminary medical care, both Anju Reeta and Himanshu Yadav were referred to the Kanpur District Hospital due to their critical condition. Meanwhile, Arpit Dixit (25) from Sagarpuri, Durga Chauhan (37), Nikhleshwar Bajpai (47), and student Raunak received primary first aid.
Faculty Members Coordinate Rescue Amid Panic
Mathematics teacher Deepal Pal, a resident of Karrahi who was inside the bus during the accident, recounted seeing the dumper barreling ahead at high speed. While the driver made every effort to swerve and evade disaster, the crash occurred in a fraction of a second. Pandemonium broke out inside the damaged bus right after the impact. The teachers quickly gathered composure, attended to the bleeding students and injured colleagues, and carefully assisted everyone out of the wreckage. The terrifying ordeal left the young children thoroughly shaken.
School Principal Collapses upon Hearing News of Death
School Principal Shubhangi Singh was traveling directly behind the school bus in her personal vehicle. Upon learning of the crash, she immediately rushed to the Bidhnu Community Health Centre. When informed of Aishwarya Srivastava's death, she collapsed in shock. Fellow teachers supported her as she repeatedly expressed profound concern for Aishwarya's grieving family. The sudden and devastating loss of a close colleague in a highway crash has cast a pall of gloom over the entire school institution.
Festive Occasion Overshadowed by Tragedy
Pankaj Sachan, Director of Cheena Public School, expressed deep sorrow over the catastrophe, explaining that the institution had organized a special gathering for October 2 to honor Mahatma Gandhi. The team of educators and students was heading toward Ghatampur in high spirits to take part in the functions. However, the accident turned a festive morning into a heartbreaking tragedy. The campus, which was set for commemorations, was instead consumed by anxiety over the hospitalized victims and mourning for the deceased teacher.
Bystanders Detain Truck Driver, Police Launch Inquiry
Immediately after the collision, nearby villagers rushed to the scene to assist the victims. The alert locals successfully intercepted the dumper driver before he could flee and handed him over to the Bidhnu police. Police officers arrived at the spot promptly, facilitating the hospital transfers of the injured victims. The body of the deceased teacher was subsequently sent for post-mortem examination. Law enforcement personnel impounded the sand-laden dumper and initiated an investigation into the crash circumstances.
