Situated in Sawalpur Nawada village of Saharanpur district, Kanha Upvan Gaushala has developed a distinctive model of environmental conservation and financial self-sustainability. Managed under the supervision of the Saharanpur Municipal Corporation, this facility houses and protects more than 550 stray cattle rescued from city roads. Rather than depending entirely on external grants, the shelter utilizes cow dung and cow urine to manufacture a diverse range of eco-friendly merchandise. In its latest venture, the shelter has introduced handmade seed balls produced from indigenous cow dung, engineered to transform abandoned plots and waste dumps into lush greenery.
Concept and Purpose Behind Cow Dung Seed Balls
The primary aim of introducing these seed balls is to facilitate reforestation and plant propagation with minimal maintenance. Each seed ball acts as a self-contained growth capsule. The dried organic cow dung surrounding the seed serves as rich, natural fertilizer that retains moisture and supplies critical nutrients. When placed or tossed onto vacant soil, neglected patches, or even degraded landfills, the protective ball dissolves under rainfall or watering, allowing the dormant seeds inside to take root and flourish into full-grown plants.
Diverse Selection of Vegetable and Flower Seeds
According to Shrawan Kumar, who oversees the production of these seed balls, the formulation incorporates a broad spectrum of popular flora. The balls are embedded with seeds of flowering marigolds alongside aromatic plants such as cardamom and clove. In addition, kitchen staples including green chillies, bottle gourd, ridge gourd, okra, and brinjal are mixed inside the dung matrix. As Shrawan Kumar explained, hundreds of these organic units are shaped daily at the facility, providing an effortless way for buyers to establish kitchen gardens or community green covers.
Affordable Pricing and Nationwide Digital Reach
To ensure widespread adoption among citizens and plant enthusiasts, the gaushala has fixed the price of each seed ball at a nominal 10 rupees. While buyers can purchase them directly through offline counters, the shelter has also listed them on Amazon for digital retail. This online distribution network has generated significant demand from various parts of India. Bulk purchase orders are steadily flowing in from regions including Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar, delivering strong operational earnings for the shelter.
Recognition as a Premier Gaushala in Uttar Pradesh
Owing to its self-reliant initiatives and methodical management, the facility is widely regarded as the leading gaushala in Uttar Pradesh. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath previously inspected the complex in person, praising the staff for rehabilitating abandoned cattle while turning livestock by-products into commercial assets. By converting street-level challenges into ecological products, the Saharanpur civic body has demonstrated how municipal cow shelters can preserve animal welfare while driving local greenery across the nation.
