The Tamil Nadu government on Friday marked Gandhi Jayanti by significantly widening the scope of its zero-fare public transit initiative for female passengers. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay launched the expanded phase of the 'Vetri Payanam' scheme, permitting women to commute without ticket charges aboard state-run deluxe and express category buses in addition to standard services. Official projections indicate that over 8.4 million women will take advantage of this expanded transport service on a daily basis across the state.
No Income Ceilings and Zero Commute Caps
A key structural aspect of the expanded transit programme is the total absence of income eligibility criteria, making the facility accessible to every female resident regardless of her financial bracket. Furthermore, the authorities have placed no restrictions on the daily frequency of rides, ensuring unhindered movement for working professionals, students, and informal sector workers. The welfare programme derives its name from the governing party 'Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam', symbolizing a 'victorious journey' for women commuters.
Broader Welfare Blueprint Alongside Transit Relief
The transit upgrade fits into a wider social support agenda announced by the current administration. State authorities previously sanctioned a two percent hike in dearness allowance for government staff, alongside outlining plans to roll out three free domestic LPG cylinders annually starting on 14 January. Incorporating higher-tier express and deluxe fleets into the non-fare network is expected to substantially cut down household mobility expenses on medium and long-distance routes.
