Continuous torrential rainfall over the past three days has caused severe flooding and widespread devastation across Mirzapur district in Uttar Pradesh. The persistent downpours have filled local reservoirs to maximum capacity, forcing authorities to discharge massive volumes of water into surrounding river systems. As minor and major rivers swelled beyond danger marks, floodwaters submerged residential properties, commercial shops, and extensive agricultural fields. Amid the raging flood currents, two people have gone missing, prompting search operations by local authorities and residents.
Dam Discharges Trigger Major River Overflow
The relentless rainfall has pushed both the Belan and Adwa rivers into a state of severe spate across Mirzapur district. To manage rising water levels in the reservoirs, officials opened 7 gates of the Adwa Dam, discharging approximately 7,000 cusecs of water into the river network. The reservoir experienced a rapid surge in water volume due to heavy inflows arriving through canals linked to the Bansagar Dam, which has also been releasing excess water into the canal infrastructure. Furthermore, simultaneous water releases from the Dadri Dam aggravated the situation, causing both the Adwa and Belan rivers to overflow violently into neighboring low-lying regions.
As the rivers breached their banks, floodwaters rapidly inundated several rural settlements, including Barautha and Hatheda villages. The surging waters damaged numerous mud houses, causing structural collapses in several places. Standing agricultural crops spread across vast tracts of farmland were completely submerged and destroyed. In local market zones, floodwaters inundated commercial shops, inflicting substantial losses on shopkeepers whose inventory and stored goods were ruined by the water.
Submerged Vehicles, Highway Toll Suspension, and Search for Missing Youths
The overflowing Belan river extended onto major roadways, completely submerging three large commercial trucks parked along the road. Near Barautha, heavy waterlogging around the local toll plaza compromised operations, forcing officials to suspend toll collection for 24 consecutive hours. As a result, commuters and passing vehicles were allowed to navigate through the flooded toll plaza without paying any fees. The treacherous water currents also led to two separate tragic incidents where two young men were swept away—one in the Adwa river and another in the Karnavati river. Despite continuous search efforts over 48 hours, neither of the missing individuals has been located.
The severe weather and flooding also shattered local utility infrastructure. Strong currents and winds collapsed multiple electricity poles across Barautha and hundreds of adjoining villages, leading to a complete power outage for two consecutive days. Officials from the electricity department are currently working on temporary restoration measures to re-establish power lines. The department's primary focus is maintaining emergency electricity connections so that municipal water supply systems remain operational, preventing a severe drinking water shortage in the flood-hit areas.
Local Eyewitness Accounts and Administrative Monitoring
Residents in affected areas described the sheer scale of the deluge. Himanshu Mishra, a local resident, noted that standing near the main roadway a day earlier was completely impossible as floodwaters had reached levels half the height of a commercial truck. He stated that such severe flooding has been witnessed after many years, causing extensive damage to roads and leaving nearly 4 to 5 villages entirely disconnected from surrounding towns. Roads have been severely degraded by the rushing water, hindering movement.
Another eyewitness, Rajkumar, recalled the frightening scene, describing how the furious river currents appeared ready to swallow everything in their path. He added that while water levels have started receding slightly, conditions remain far from normal as waterlogging persists in many places. District administration officials, led by the District Magistrate, are actively monitoring ground conditions across the district. Authorities emphasized that a comprehensive assessment of structural, commercial, and agricultural damage will be conducted once floodwaters recede completely.
