A catastrophic incident unfolded late Tuesday evening in the Chaitanya Vihar locality of Vrindavan, located in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh. Four young students lost their lives after inhaling lethal fumes inside a deep tank at Maharshi Parini Sanskrit Gurukul Vidyalaya, while a fifth student remains in critical condition under close medical supervision. Following an immediate distress call, police forces and administrative officers reached the scene to conduct rescue operations. Authorities moved swiftly to detain the manager of the gurukul, identified as Ashish, along with one associate for questioning. The Chief Minister took direct cognisance of the matter, instructing officials to conduct an exhaustive inquiry while ensuring prompt medical care for the surviving victim.
Facility Functioned Without Valid Registration
Preliminary findings revealed that approximately 200 students were officially enrolled at the religious institute. Out of these, nearly 100 boys resided full-time on campus, pursuing studies in Sanskrit literature, sacred Vedic texts, ritual conduct, and traditional prayer ceremonies. The pupil body comprised youngsters hailing from several states across the country, notably Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar. Serious allegations have surfaced indicating that the residential school operated entirely without statutory registration or regulatory approval. Furthermore, the facility reportedly forced enrolled minors to cook meals and handle sanitation chores across the premises alongside their academic routines.
Minors Ordered Into 12-Foot Tank To Clear Blockage
The tragedy began unfolding on Tuesday evening when a foul stench began emanating from an overflowing, 12-foot-deep underground tank situated at the rear of the campus building. Instead of securing certified sanitation technicians, the administration deployed students directly into the hazard. A student named Manu Katare was the first to enter the pit and collapsed almost instantaneously due to asphyxiating fumes. Attempting to rescue their fallen companion, four other pupils named Aryan, Devansh, Vishu, and Rudra descended into the opening one after another. Overcome by the concentrated toxic environment, all five boys lost consciousness within minutes.
Four Fatalities Confirmed At Emergency Care
Rescuers managed to retrieve the five unconscious youths from the pit and rushed them to a medical centre. Attending physicians pronounced Manu, Devansh, Aryan, and Vishu dead upon arrival. The fifth boy, Rudra, survived the exposure and is currently battling for recovery under intensive clinical observation.
Outrage Follows Mishap As Police Detain Administrators
Tension flared following the deaths, leading to the tearing down of a banner erected at the gurukul entrance. Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar stated that investigators are probing the specific circumstances that culminated in the disaster to pin down administrative accountability. Police have already taken two individuals into custody, and formal criminal charges will be registered following formal written complaints submitted by the bereaved relatives.
