A horrific accident shook Greater Noida's Badalpur police station area on the morning of July 21, when a heavy truck loaded with iron rods lost control and plunged straight into a roadside drain. The mishap took place around six in the morning near Chhaprola on GT Road, as the truck was travelling from Ghaziabad towards Dadri. This stretch usually sees heavy vehicle movement early in the day, and news of the crash quickly sent residents rushing towards the spot. The impact was so severe that the driver died right at the scene, with panic spreading through the neighbourhood soon after.
Did the driver doze off at the wheel?
According to station house officer Vijay Kumar Gupta, the truck first swerved into an electric transformer installed by the roadside before flipping over and sinking into the deep drain. The force of the crash was so intense that the iron rods stacked at the back tore straight through the cabin. As the truck went down into the drain, those very rods pierced through the driver's body. He suffered critical injuries and lost a massive amount of blood, losing his life at the site before help could reach him. Police believe the driver may have briefly dozed off during the early morning hours, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and triggering the fatal crash.
Two hours of effort before the body could be recovered
Once word of the accident reached the police station, a team from Badalpur rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation to pull the truck and the trapped driver out of the drain. The operation was gruelling, and it took nearly two hours before the body could finally be extricated. The deceased was later identified as 28 year old Aamir, a resident of Bulandshahr. Police have taken custody of the body, sent it for a post mortem examination, and are continuing to investigate the exact circumstances of the crash.
Long traffic jam before GT Road was cleared
The accident also disrupted traffic on GT Road, with vehicles backing up for a considerable stretch and commuters stuck for a long while. To restore normal movement, police called in a crane and used it to haul the wrecked truck out of both the road and the drain. Once the wreckage was cleared away, traffic on GT Road gradually returned to its usual flow and commuters breathed a sigh of relief.
