Police across five districts in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow range have launched a large scale crackdown on accused persons wanted on non-bailable warrants. Between Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Hardoi, Rae Bareli and Unnao, police arrested a combined 307 warrant accused, while legal action of various kinds was completed against 632 warrant accused in total. Here is how the operation unfolded district by district, and which officers led it.
Lakhimpur Kheri: 61 arrested, 16 surrender before court
Under the leadership of SSP Kheri Dr. Khyati Garg, police teams formed to achieve full disposal of court-issued non-bailable warrants moved quickly against the accused. The drive led to 61 warrant accused being arrested and sent to jail, while 16 accused appeared before the court on their own. Police also served summons on 141 warrant accused at their homes so that they turn up in court on the scheduled date. In all, action of some form was completed against 218 warrant accused in the district.
Sitapur: 70 arrests, 15 cases where the accused had already died
Under the leadership of the Superintendent of Police, Sitapur, the drive against wanted and warrant accused resulted in 70 arrests. Separately, 21 accused appeared in court on their own and summons were served on 61 warrant accused. During verification, police also found 15 cases where the accused named in the warrant had already died before it could be executed.
Hardoi: 60 arrested, 13 warrant accused found dead
A special drive led by Superintendent of Police Hardoi, Ashok Kumar Meena, resulted in the arrest of 60 warrant accused. During the operation, 28 accused appeared in court on their own while summons were served on 4 warrant accused. Verification also revealed that 13 warrant accused had already died, and the process to close their warrants has now begun.
Unnao and Rae Bareli: 53 and 63 warrant accused held
In Unnao, a drive led by Senior Superintendent of Police Jaiprakash Singh led to the arrest of 53 wanted and warrant accused, while 21 others appeared in court or surrendered. In Rae Bareli, Superintendent of Police Ravi Kumar's team arrested 63 warrant accused. One accused appeared in court on his own, and verification turned up 4 cases where the warrant accused had died.
Recent tough action in Kanpur too
Earlier, police in Kanpur also took a hard line after stones were pelted at police personnel, arresting 7 people including a lekhpal.
Why the drive was launched
Police officers across all five districts of the Lucknow range have said the operation is being run with the target of clearing pending non-bailable warrants completely, so that wanted accused cannot evade the law indefinitely and court proceedings are not delayed further.
