A family from a remote village in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand has been waiting eight years for their patriarch to return home from abroad. Indramani Nautiyal had traveled overseas in search of employment to support his household, but an unfortunate vehicular collision entangled him in complex foreign legal proceedings. Even after completing his formal prison term, he remained unable to leave the country. Determined to bring him back, his daughter Deepika Nautiyal launched a widespread public initiative that has galvanized local villagers, community leaders, and people across regions.
The Road Collision and Legal Complications
Indramani Nautiyal hails from Gorsada village, situated in the Gajana area of Uttarkashi district. In 2018, driven by the need to alleviate his family's financial hardship and secure a better livelihood, he traveled to Saudi Arabia for employment. Upon his arrival, he began working as a truck driver for a private commercial firm operating in the city of Riyadh. However, during his work routine that same year, the truck he was operating became involved in a severe road accident.
Following legal proceedings in the local court, Indramani was awarded a one-year prison sentence in connection with the vehicular crash. He completed the full term of this sentence behind bars. Yet, his legal ordeal did not end with his time served; instead, further bureaucratic and regulatory complications arose surrounding the vehicle he had been driving.
The Multi-Crore Financial Penalty Blocking Repatriation
During subsequent official scrutiny, authorities discovered several lapses and deficiencies regarding the commercial vehicle's registration papers and insurance policy. On account of these regulatory shortcomings, a massive administrative penalty of 9 lakh Saudi Riyals was imposed on the company owner. In Indian currency, this financial penalty amounts to approximately 2 crore 29 lakh rupees.
Because this substantial sum remained unpaid over the years, Indramani's official release and subsequent repatriation to India remained entirely unresolved. His relatives have highlighted that the sheer magnitude of the monetary penalty has made settlement impossible through their modest means alone. Furthermore, the family has alleged that the employer firm retained Indramani's passport and other essential travel credentials, though the official standing of these claims remains tied to the foreign jurisdiction's legal procedures.
Daughter's Crowdfunding Campaign and Community Solidarity
Witnessing her father's protracted confinement abroad, Deepika Nautiyal took it upon herself to orchestrate a rescue initiative. Utilizing public platforms and digital outreach, she appealed to ordinary citizens, elected public representatives, and government authorities for urgent financial assistance. Her emotional appeal rapidly garnered momentum, attracting donations and backing from civil society groups, non-resident sympathizers, and residents across Uttarakhand and beyond.
Reflecting this spirit of community solidarity, residents of Bhawan village came together under the leadership of their local village head, Satveer Parmar. The villagers collectively raised a relief contribution of 41,901 rupees, which Gram Pradhan Satveer Parmar officially handed over to Deepika Nautiyal in the form of a bank cheque. Through this campaign, Deepika has managed to collect more than 2 crore rupees in donations. Nevertheless, further financial support remains necessary to bridge the remaining gap and fulfill the total required penalty of 2.29 crore rupees.
