A distressing case of elder abandonment has surfaced in the Rajpur area of Dehradun, where a 70-year-old mother has spent the last year and a half visiting the District Magistrate's office in search of basic maintenance and justice. Following the death of her husband ten years ago, Meena Devi has found herself completely destitute and alienated by her adult children. At a stage in life that requires care, dignity, and family support, she is instead compelled to walk with the aid of a cane to attend public hearings at administrative headquarters, seeking financial assistance from the very children she raised.
Domestic Friction, Physical Harassment, and Severe Deprivation
Sharing her circumstances, the elderly woman alleged that her sons refuse to support her with daily sustenance and have repeatedly subjected her to mental harassment and physical altercations. Meena Devi stated that both her sons and daughters-in-law pick frequent fights with her, escalating situations into scuffles. With no financial reserves and no secure living arrangements, she is caught in an acute personal crisis, struggling to secure even regular meals while coping with ongoing household mistreatment.
Physical Illnesses and Loss of Traditional Livelihood
Life took a harsh turn a decade ago when Meena Devi lost her husband. In earlier years, she managed to earn a modest living by offering traditional post-natal massage services to new mothers and infants. However, advancing age alongside debilitating back and leg pain has made such strenuous physical labor impossible. Complicating the domestic scenario further, her younger son suffered an accident that left him unable to work, making the ongoing cost of his medical prescriptions another severe burden that the family cannot comfortably sustain.
Surgical Needs Stalled by Lack of Money
Medical professionals have advised Meena Devi to undergo surgery to address severe issues in her legs, but she lacks the funds to proceed with the medical procedure. She explained that on the rare occasions her sons provide financial support, it amounts to merely 1,500 over a period of three months. This minuscule sum is entirely inadequate to cover both daily grocery needs and regular pharmaceutical supplies, leaving her in continuous distress and prompting her formal complaints to local governance authorities.
Administrative Notices and Warnings of Severe Action
Despite appearing repeatedly at public grievance hearings over the past eighteen months, Meena Devi has so far received mainly assurances rather than tangible relief. The district administration confirmed that official letters were previously dispatched to the woman's sons instructing them to provide monthly maintenance allowances. Authorities have now cautioned that if the sons continue to neglect their legal and moral duty to support their elderly mother, strict punitive measures will be enforced against them.
