Vote counting for the crucial assembly by-elections in West Bengal's Nandigram and Rejinagar constituencies gets underway at 8 AM today. Following a fiercely contested campaign and high-stakes voting held on 6 October, the results are set to decide the electoral fortunes of major political camps across the state. Extensive security arrangements were deployed during the polls, including 71 companies of central security forces to monitor polling booths and maintain order.
Multi-Cornered Political Battle
The bypolls feature an intense contest involving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC), a rebel TMC faction, the Left Front (CPI-M), and Humayun Kabir's AJUP. Political tensions had run high during the polling process, including the detention of Humayun Kabir by police in Rejinagar on voting day amidst sharp allegations traded between competing parties.
High Voter Turnout Across Both Constituencies
Voters turned out in large numbers to exercise their franchise across both assembly segments. Official polling figures show that Rejinagar recorded an impressive 78.42 percent voter turnout, while Nandigram witnessed an even higher participation rate at 79.39 percent. Along with other by-election contests across four states, all eyes are now firmly set on the counting tables as the final outcome unfolds.
