A major assault targeted a prominent aviation hub in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia near Dammam, resulting in the death of one local resident and injuries to eight others. The civil aviation authority of Saudi Arabia shared these details early Thursday following an incident late Wednesday night that also caused physical damage to the airport infrastructure. Flight-tracking service Flightradar24 posted on X that incoming flights to the facility were rerouted immediately due to the security situation.
Lack of Immediate Claim and Previous Incidents
Officials have not yet specified who carried out the assault or provided further details regarding the perpetrators. King Fahd Airport has previously been targeted in a series of Houthi missile and projectile strikes directed at major aviation facilities in the country. Iran-backed Houthi forces have not issued any comments concerning the latest incident. Meanwhile, the Saudi-led coalition stated that it successfully neutralized four drone attacks in the eastern sector. The late-night explosion at the airport caused casualties and forced operational disruptions for several flights.
United States Departure Directive
In response to the escalating security concerns, the United States issued a directive late Wednesday instructing certain diplomats and family members of government employees to leave Saudi Arabia. This measure was prompted by a series of lethal attacks conducted by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen and growing fears that the regional conflict could escalate further.
Oil Field Casualties and Incidents
This development coincided with a statement from the Ministry of Energy revealing that a drone was intercepted and destroyed over an Aramco-operated oil field in the country's southeast. Debris from the intercepted drone struck individuals in the vicinity, causing two deaths and two injuries. The ministry reported that the deceased individuals were citizens of Nepal and the Philippines, whereas the injured persons included nationals from Pakistan and India.
Recent Escalation in Targeting
Last month, debris from another intercepted Houthi drone struck and killed a Yemeni resident living in Saudi Arabia. That marked the first civilian casualty since the rebel faction intensified its campaign targeting shipping vessels and energy installations across the kingdom. Furthermore, earlier this month, an administrative building belonging to Aramco located in the Eastern Province caught fire during a separate hostile action.
