A massive garbage mound suddenly collapsed amid torrential downpours in Guinea's capital Conakry, burying numerous makeshift huts and homes beneath tons of waste. The horrific disaster has claimed the lives of at least 30 people, while six others sustained serious injuries. The calamity, which unfolded late Sunday night, has sent shockwaves across the entire region.
Midnight Landslide at the Massive Dump Site
The tragedy struck at approximately 2 AM. At that hour, the area was enduring relentless rainfall, which triggered the collapse of the colossal waste accumulation at Dar es Salaam, Conakry's largest refuse disposal site. Within minutes, conditions mirrored a devastating natural landslide.
The towering heap of garbage came crashing down directly onto adjacent shanties, trapping multiple families underneath. Emergency response and rescue teams rushed to the scene immediately upon receiving alerts, launching search operations to locate survivors buried under the debris. Several homes were entirely obliterated by the avalanche of refuse.
Authorities Had Planned Prior Closure of the Site
Officials noted that the open garbage dump at Dar es Salaam serves as the city's primary waste management facility. Lieutenant Colonel Balde Mamadou Bailo, a sanitation officer with the military engineering battalion, stated that authorities had already scheduled the closure of this landfill starting Sunday.
Residents living in the vicinity of the landfill had also been served formal notices to vacate the area. While numerous families heeded the warning and relocated beforehand, a substantial number of people remained present at the site when the disaster struck.
Relief Operations and Relocation Plans Underway
Regional administration and minister Djenabou Toure, who visited the disaster site, announced that the government is actively relocating the surviving families to secure locations. At present, the foremost challenge remains rescuing anyone trapped under the rubble. Search operations continue unabated, and authorities have expressed fears that the death toll could rise further.

Guinea is a nation exceptionally blessed with natural resources, boasting some of the planet's largest bauxite reserves.
