Students pursuing higher education in Chitrakoot district have reason to cheer. The Social Welfare Department has begun the admission process for government hostels for the 2026-27 academic session, under which eligible students will get free hostel accommodation while they study. This comes as a big relief for students from economically weaker families, who often struggle to afford expensive rented rooms near their colleges. With free accommodation available, these students will be able to focus on their studies without worrying about where to stay or how to pay for it.
Which Hostels Have Opened Admissions
Online applications have opened for admission to the Government Scheduled Caste Hostel at Bedipuliya (Karvi) and the Mau Hostel, both run under the Social Welfare Department. Interested students can apply through the department's official portal until 20 July 2026. However, filling out the online form is not the final step. After submitting the application online, students must also submit a hard copy of the form along with the required documents to the concerned hostel office within the stipulated deadline. In other words, the process has two stages, an online application followed by offline verification with documents.
Documents Required for the Application
While applying, students need to upload their academic certificates, residence certificate, caste certificate, and income certificate, along with other necessary documents, on the portal. On top of that, once the online application is submitted, its printed copy must be certified by the principal of the school or college the student is enrolled in. This certification step ensures that the applicant is genuinely studying at the institution they are citing to claim the hostel facility. Once the entire process is complete, eligible students will be shortlisted based on the prescribed eligibility criteria and given free hostel accommodation.
Who Is Eligible for the Scheme
District Social Welfare Officer Vaibhav Tripathi said the scheme's benefits will be extended to eligible students from the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Other Backward Class, General category, and the differently-abled category, covering all categories of students. According to him, the scheme is specifically meant for students whose homes are located far from their educational institutions and who are forced to live away from home to continue their studies. The selection will be carried out strictly on the basis of the fixed eligibility conditions and rules, meaning a student gets a hostel seat only after their application has been verified.
What Students Stand to Gain
Tripathi further said that living in the hostel will give students a safe environment along with financial relief. It will save them the expense of renting a room or paying for a mess, easing the financial burden on their families. Besides that, staying in the hostel will free up more time for studies, since students won't need to spend time commuting between home and their institution. Overall, the facility is expected to be a major support system for students who are otherwise kept away from higher education purely due to a shortage of money or a lack of accommodation.
