Hidden Strings in a Claude Code Update Hint Fable 5 Is About to Return, This Time Built Into Your Subscription

Fresh text strings spotted in Claude Code version 2.1.190 suggest Anthropic is preparing to bring Fable 5 back, with weekly usage folded directly into subscription plans rather than sold as separate credits.

Anthropic's Fable 5 may be on its way back, and the version that returns could land inside existing subscription plans instead of costing anything extra. The first clue sits in a set of fresh text strings buried in a recent Claude Code release.

A leaker going by "synthwavedd" on X posted Tuesday that Claude Code version 2.1.190 carries new strings pointing toward a Fable 5 comeback, with weekly usage baked straight into subscription plans. The standout line: "You've used your Fable 5 usage for this week."

The strings are genuine

The strings check out. The macOS Apple Silicon build of Claude Code 2.1.190, available through npm, carries the new copy inside its bundled executable: "You've used your included Fable 5 usage for this week. Continuing on Fable 5 uses usage credits."

Fable 5 was first offered to subscribers for a limited free window, after which it was meant to shift to usage credits sold separately. The Donald Trump administration never let Anthropic get that far, banning the model just days after its release on the grounds that it could become a national threat if jailbroken.

A weekly allowance, not a top-up

The new string strips out that separation and implies a recurring weekly allocation. Think of it like a data plan that resets every seven days, rather than something you keep topping up out of pocket.

The leaker also pointed out that the phrase "purchased separately from your plan" appears to have been dropped from the relevant UI copy. That suggests the pricing model itself is being rebuilt, not just reworded.

None of this means Fable 5 returns tomorrow. Code changes like these happen constantly during product planning, with companies writing UI copy for features they are actively preparing months before anything ships. But code doesn't lie about what a team is building toward. When strings change in a production binary, something is in motion.

Amazon Bedrock adds to the signals

Some users have also pointed out that Amazon Bedrock still lists Claude Fable 5 among its models, which could mean this happens sooner rather than later. Fable 5 has shown up in the Amazon Bedrock model catalog, listed as sold by Anthropic. Stacked on top of the Claude Code 2.1.190 string changes, the signals are piling up fast.

The ban and the standoff that followed

Fable 5, the first of the company's Mythos-class models to be made publicly available, was pulled on June 12 after the Trump administration issued an emergency export control directive citing a jailbreak vulnerability. Anthropic complied but disputed how serious the finding really was, arguing that any model currently on the market could reproduce the same vulnerability without needing a bypass at all.

What came next was a public standoff that turned messy fast. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei ended up awkwardly seated across a large oval table from Trump at the G7 summit in France, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at the president's side and Amodei next to French President Emmanuel Macron.

Anthropic is not a company that currently enjoys much favor with Trump. The firm refused to let the Pentagon use its AI in certain warfare-related applications, a stance that eventually got it labeled a supply-chain risk. Trump has also accused Anthropic of being "woke," a label that rarely wins anyone points with the president.

A thaw this week

This week, though, things appear to have shifted. Anthropic swapped out Dario Amodei for cofounder Tom Brown as its point person in White House talks about Fable 5's return, and the administration has been more comfortable since Brown took the lead.

Brown has been in meetings with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross since mid-June. The negotiations now center on building a shared framework for evaluating AI jailbreak incidents, essentially agreed-upon criteria for when a model vulnerability actually counts as a national security threat and when it doesn't.

Trump himself said last week that he no longer views Anthropic as a national security threat, walking back a position he held as recently as mid-June. Anthropic answered with a carefully worded statement thanking the administration for its "ongoing partnership." The model is still offline today, but the political temperature has clearly dropped.

If the new strings in Claude Code are any guide, Anthropic is now designing something closer to what subscribers expected from the start: Fable 5 access on a weekly cadence, built into the plan rather than metered through a separate credits wallet. For now, the company's status page still shows the June 13 suspension as active, with no restoration date announced.

What this means for you

  • For Claude users: If the signals hold up, Fable 5 access could come bundled into your existing subscription on a weekly basis, with no separate credits to buy.
  • For now: The model is still offline with no confirmed restoration date, so don't expect access right away.
