Cloud-based software development platform Replit has made a significant shift in its artificial intelligence strategy by naming OpenAI as its default and preferred partner, moving away from Anthropic. Although Replit had announced a partnership with OpenAI back in August, there were no initial indications that its longstanding relationship with Anthropic was being phased out.
Performance, Cost, and Metrics
The decision was driven by multiple factors, including overall cost, performance capabilities, and partnership strength. Company executives utilize an internal benchmark to assess metrics such as performance, while also publishing public benchmarks consistently showing that Sol and Astra perform better when building vibe-coded applications from scratch. This combination of economic viability and technical execution made OpenAI the preferred choice for the current phase.
Anthropic Remains Available to Users
Despite shifting its default preference, Replit has not completely cut ties with Anthropic. The platform allows users to build and deploy applications directly inside their browser environment. Before striking the deal with OpenAI, the platform relied exclusively on Anthropic's Claude models, a collaboration that reportedly helped grow revenue significantly and positioned Replit as a top-five customer for Anthropic until recently.
Platform Remains Model Agnostic
The overarching architecture remains flexible for developers. Replit operates as a model-agnostic platform where users retain the freedom to select Anthropic's Claude or other supported models according to their preferences. However, OpenAI serves as the primary engine powering Replit Agent due to economics and partnership strength, even though industry insiders have offered contrasting accounts regarding the status of the older collaboration.
Recent Product Promotions
Evidence across company documentation, blog posts, and social media channels indicates that Anthropic products were actively promoted until recently. A late September blog post cited Claude Fable 5 and Claude Fable 5.1 operating within the production environment. Around the same timeframe, a product employee posted on X highlighting the flagship Opus 5.5 model and its capabilities.
Revenue Growth and Enterprise Expansion
Financial metrics reflect substantial shifts in business composition. Enterprise contracts accounted for roughly 2% of revenue last year, but that figure has climbed to approximately 15% this year, with B2B transactions driving over 50% of total revenue. Projections indicate that enterprise and government customers will account for more than half of all revenue by the year 2027.
The Importance of AI Safety and Infrastructure
Security and infrastructure remain vital priorities for deploying autonomous tools safely. Just as human workers require comfortable office environments, proper equipment, and climate control, AI agents need a dedicated habitat equipped with orchestration, error recovery, robust security, sandboxing, networking, and identity authorization to execute tasks securely.
