The government of Assam is expanding its administrative framework by establishing eight additional co-districts, a move that will raise the total count of operational units across the state to 47, as announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday.
Enhancing Administrative Reach
Sarma noted that this administrative expansion is designed to bring public services and governmental machinery closer to residents, paying special attention to those living in remote and rural locations where reaching traditional district headquarters poses a significant logistical challenge.
Detailing the initiative on social media, Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on X that proper governance starts when the administration moves closer to the public, adding that the co-district model accomplishes precisely that objective. With 39 units already functioning, the addition of 8 more aims to deepen the ease of governance throughout the state.
Decentralisation and Overcoming Terrain Barriers
The co-district framework serves as a central pillar of the state administration's decentralisation strategy. It enables citizens to access a wide array of official services locally, eliminating the need to travel long distances to central district offices.
This model addresses difficulties in regions where challenging terrain, vast distances, and connectivity hurdles hamper access to district administration. By stationing administrative offices nearer to local populations, authorities intend to simplify service delivery, cut down bureaucratic delays, and foster better grassroots coordination among departments. Furthermore, this rollout is projected to accelerate welfare implementation and strengthen last-mile delivery.
Reforms and Future Implementation
Alongside these structural changes, the state administration has pursued broader administrative reforms coupled with digital governance to eliminate procedural bottlenecks and enhance citizen-centric delivery. Formal notifications detailing the exact locations and administrative boundaries for the eight new co-districts are anticipated to be issued by the government as the expansion moves forward.
