Working professionals across India are grappling with a persistent disconnect between their job titles and their actual take-home pay. A large segment of the domestic workforce feels this pinch, as workplace designations often fail to reflect the true financial growth and recognition employees deserve. These revealing insights came to light on Tuesday through a comprehensive new survey report.
Thousands of Employees and Companies Surveyed
According to the quarterly hiring tracker report from Indeed, nearly 6 out of 10 individuals stated that their job designation does not accurately mirror their salary scale. The findings are built upon structured feedback gathered from 1,211 companies and 2,533 employees spanning various sectors across the country.
The report highlights that inflated designations have practically become the norm within the corporate ecosystem. Nearly 80 percent of the employees who participated in the survey shared their belief that giving out elevated job titles without any corresponding bump in remuneration has grown routine, with many observing colleagues secure senior-sounding titles minus a matching financial upgrade.
The True Meaning of a Professional Title
Weighing in on the findings, Indeed India Managing Director Shashi Kumar noted that a job title has historically served as a core identity marker for any professional. He pointed out that titles remain meaningful because they signal capabilities and future opportunities, but they achieve maximum effectiveness only when they mirror genuine career advancement.
Conducted Across May and June
The underlying data was collected through a survey executed by ValueVox on behalf of Indeed during May and June of 2026. The findings indicate that roughly 1 in every 3 employees who secured a designation change over the past two years received either zero salary hike or an increment of less than 5 percent. Concurrently, 52 percent of respondents noted that when weighing new career moves, they would prioritize a higher salary package over a more impressive sounding job title.
Future Growth and Corporate Image
Despite the pay discrepancies, Indian professionals do not dismiss job titles entirely. The report underlines that 70 percent of workers believe their designation plays a crucial role in shaping future career opportunities, while roughly 73 percent feel that holding a superior title enhances their standing and corporate image within the organization.
