Assam has crossed a major public health milestone with the specialised oncology infrastructure under the Assam Cancer Care Foundation delivering nearly 15 lakh patient services in approximately four years since its rollout. Established as a joint initiative between the state government and Tata Trusts, the foundation has broadened regional access to clinical care, diagnostic evaluations, chemotherapy sessions, radiation treatments, and oncological surgical procedures across the state.
Progress review highlights rapid operational scale
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired the foundation's board meeting alongside its annual general meeting on Thursday night to assess on-ground progress and review ongoing programs aimed at upgrading state oncology facilities. In an assessment shared through a social media post, he highlighted that the sheer volume of interventions conducted within such a short timeframe was among the most significant findings reviewed during the administrative gathering.
"The figure that struck me most was this: in just about four years since inception, our hospitals have delivered nearly 15 lakh patient services, from consultations and diagnostics to chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery."
The operational network has steadily altered medical referral patterns for patients in the region. Rather than being forced to undertake long, exhausting journeys to distant metropolitan centres across the country for specialized cancer management, residents can now secure comprehensive therapies closer to home.
Five additional oncology centres slated for expansion
While the network currently functions through 12 dedicated medical units, the state is advancing plans to enlarge this clinical footprint. New hospital projects are in development across five districts, covering Dhubri, Nalbari, Nagaon, Sivasagar, and Goalpara. Administrative officials have received directives to accelerate the construction timeline for these planned facilities to bring high-standard clinical care directly into semi-urban and rural areas.
The foundational partnership between the Assam government and Tata Trusts focuses on creating a reliable, statewide cancer infrastructure that makes advanced cancer intervention both geographically reachable and financially affordable. Once the five additional units become operational, regional health capacity is anticipated to see an even greater operational surge.
