A special NDPS court in Assam’s Kamrup Metropolitan district has sentenced three individuals to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with a six-year-old drug trafficking case, according to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Guwahati Zonal Unit.
Court Imposes Heavy Fines on Convicts
The judicial authority also slapped a fine of Rs 2 lakh on each of the three convicts. According to officials from the NCB, if any of the convicts fail to deposit the penalty amount, they will have to undergo an additional one-year prison term.
Background of the 2020 Arrests
The trio was originally apprehended back in October 2020 from the Six Mile area situated in Guwahati after law enforcement officials recovered 2.146 kg of methamphetamine in their possession. Following the recovery, an official case was registered against them under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. The convicts have been identified as Shakil Khan and Md. Yahiya Khan, both hailing from Manipur, alongside Mithilesh Kumar who belongs to Bihar.
Separate Operation in Sribhumi Yields Yaba Tablets
In an unrelated crackdown within the state, Assam Police detained five individuals and confiscated 14,000 Yaba tablets valued at approximately Rs 1.4 crore in Sribhumi district. The illicit items were intercepted when police officials pulled over two vehicles in Badarpur, as confirmed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Sharing details of the operation online, Sarma wrote that @sribhumipolice intercepted two vehicles at Badarpur and seized the narcotics alongside apprehending five suspects. He further commended @assampolice for successfully executing the raid. Yaba is an illegal stimulant containing methamphetamine that remains strictly prohibited across India, where it is classified tightly under controlled substances regulation.
