Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in the national capital on Monday to review the state road infrastructure, placing a primary focus on restoring National Highways damaged by severe floods and fortifying the network against future deluges.
Data-Driven Planning for Flood Resilience
During the discussion, Sarma emphasized the vital need to integrate comprehensive flood-related data directly into highway planning. He noted that this approach should specifically govern the engineering design and strategic placement of bridges and culverts across vulnerable zones. According to the Chief Minister, enhanced evidence-based planning for such critical structures will significantly improve local drainage networks and mitigate the disruptive impact of seasonal flooding on vital highway connectivity.
Tackling Jorabat Flash Floods and Flagship Projects
A central topic on the agenda was the persistent issue of recurring flash flooding at Jorabat. Participants examined a comprehensive redesign of the local highway infrastructure to permanently resolve the challenge. Sarma expressed deep gratitude for Gadkari assurance that the matter would receive the highest consideration from the central authorities. The meeting also evaluated the ongoing progress of several flagship road initiatives across Assam, including the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor and the Guwahati Ring Road, alongside the systematic upgrading of major highway stretches throughout the state.

Sarma acknowledged that the central government has consistently backed Assam and voiced confidence that the state infrastructure requirements will continue to receive due attention. He called for accelerated execution across all ongoing projects and praised Gadkari for his unwavering support. Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita was also in attendance at the discussions.
