A biker died in Harnaut in Bihar's Nalanda district after being hit by a police vehicle, triggering angry protests as villagers blocked a highway late at night and set fires on the road.
How the accident happened
The incident took place near Rupaspur village on NH 20, within the Harnaut police station area, where a young man riding a motorcycle was struck by a police vehicle. He died on the spot. News of the death spread quickly through the village, turning grief into outrage within hours.
Hundreds block highway, place body on road
Late at night, the victim's family, joined by hundreds of villagers, gathered near Rupaspur on NH 20 and placed the body on the road to block traffic. Protesters also set fires during the demonstration. The blockade brought traffic on the Bakhtiyarpur-Bihar Sharif highway to a standstill, with long queues of vehicles building up on both sides for hours.
Family accuses police of strangling the victim
The protesting villagers and family members alleged that this was not a mere accident, claiming the police officer had strangled the young man to death. The angry crowd demanded the immediate arrest of the accused policeman and strict action against him, insisting the blockade would not be lifted without an assurance of action.
Police rush to the spot to pacify the crowd
As word of the incident spread, local police reached the scene and worked to calm the agitated villagers and family members in an effort to get the highway reopened and bring the situation under control.
Part of a wider pattern of biker deaths
The Nalanda incident adds to a string of recent cases across India involving motorcyclists losing their lives on the road. In Haridwar's Laksar area in Uttarakhand, two young men died after their bike collided with a vehicle while they were reportedly fleeing from police, and a constable who was chasing them was also injured. In Bihar, a biker returning to his village died after being hit by an unidentified vehicle on the JP Setu in Patna. Separately, hit and run cases involving bikers have also been reported from Varanasi and Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh. These incidents have reignited concerns over road safety and how police handle such situations on the ground.
