A major controversy has erupted surrounding the late night conclusion of a 26-day hunger strike at a hospital, with accusations of a breached agreement over the release of photographs. The fast, which was initiated to demand strict action regarding the NEET-UG paper leak, ended following a midnight meeting with Union Ministers at a private healthcare facility. However, allegations have surfaced stating that photographs taken during the fast breaking ceremony were leaked to television channels despite an explicit understanding that they would remain private until a joint multi-party announcement was organized.
High-Level Midnight Meeting at Medanta Hospital
The sequence of events traces back to a protest demonstration that began at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. On June 28, a 26-day hunger strike was launched to demand accountability over the NEET-UG examination paper leak, offering support to the movement led by Abhijit Dipke of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). As the hunger strike progressed, health conditions deteriorated significantly, requiring initial medical attention before being transferred to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram for specialized care. It was during this hospital stay that Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh arrived past midnight to hold discussions.
Inside the hospital room, discussions took place regarding the health of the hunger striker and the protocols for ending the 26-day fast. Photographers accompanying the Union Ministers documented the moment the fast was concluded. However, severe objections were subsequently raised regarding the immediate broadcast of these images, pointing to a direct breach of conditions agreed upon during the midnight interaction.
Stipulations on Media Release and Intelligence Bureau Presence
During the midnight discussions, a clear understanding was established that no visual material or official public announcements regarding the conclusion of the fast would be released to the public immediately. Senior officers from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) who were present inside the hospital room served as witnesses to this explicit arrangement. The agreed protocol stipulated that images would be withheld until representatives from opposition parties and student organizations could be brought together for a collective declaration.
This understanding was broken within minutes of the meeting. While preparations were underway to coordinate with opposition leaders and gather their images for a unified presentation, a senior IB officer informed those present inside the room that footage showing the termination of the hunger strike was already being broadcast live across multiple television news networks.
Ladakh Cultural Tradition and the Demand for Multi-Party Representation
Providing context for the proposed joint announcement, references were made to the traditional customs of Ladakh. Under Ladakhi cultural traditions, when authorities accept the demands of protesters, official representatives offer juice or soup to mark the end of a fast. However, in this instance, there was a firm determination not to project the resolution as an exclusive political achievement or initiative of the ruling party alone.
To avoid a partisan portrayal, a suggestion was put forward advocating for a joint public declaration featuring leaders from opposition political parties alongside representatives of student organizations. Because the Union Ministers had reached the hospital after midnight, it was decided that the fast would be physically terminated that night, but the official media campaign and public photograph release would occur only after all stakeholders were present together.
Rejection of Secret Deal Allegations and Stand on Principles
All allegations suggesting a clandestine midnight deal or compromise with the government have been firmly dismissed. It was emphasized that if a compromise had been the goal, enduring a grueling 26-day hunger strike that severely compromised physical health would never have been necessary. Ample opportunities to settle had arisen much earlier, but principles were maintained throughout the protest without yielding to pressure.
The 26-day agitation focused squarely on demanding thorough investigations and systemic fixes following the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. While the hunger strike at Medanta Hospital came to a close following the intervention of Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh, the rapid broadcast of the fast-breaking images has left lingering questions about administrative protocol, transparency, and trust during high-level negotiations.
