In the latest crackdown, law enforcement authorities in Patna apprehended a young woman and her associate on charges of running an illegal alcohol transport network. According to police reports, the suspect traveled all the way from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh to Patna carrying a consignment of liquor hidden in her bags. A search of her luggage yielded English liquor valued at approximately 14,000 rupees, highlighting how smuggling rings are increasingly utilizing individuals who fit outside the typical criminal profile.
Student turned bootlegger operating in Patna
The detained female suspect has been identified as Riya, a resident of Danapur who was residing in Patna while pursuing her Bachelor of Arts degree. Investigators revealed that she exploited her student status as a cover while transporting alcohol shipments from Varanasi by train to supply local clients in Patna. On Wednesday, police intercepted Riya near the Patna Junction and conducted a thorough search of her handbag and shoulder bag, uncovering English liquor worth nearly 14,000 rupees. During subsequent questioning, Riya disclosed to investigators that she had been lured into the operation with the promise of a 2,000 rupee payout for successfully delivering the consignment from Varanasi to Patna.
Intercepted before final delivery
Authorities stated that Riya was scheduled to meet an accomplice who arrived at Patna Junction on a motorcycle to pick her up. The pair intended to transport the contraband on the motorcycle toward Danapur, where the final delivery of the alcohol was slated to take place. However, vigilant police teams apprehended both suspects before they could complete the handoff. Investigators are now probing further into the hierarchy of the syndicate to identify the individuals who orchestrated the supply chain and to uncover other potential members linked to the operation.
Parallel smuggling incident uncovered in Samastipur
The arrest of a female suspect in Patna coincides with another recent high-profile liquor seizure in Samastipur involving a woman named Neha Jha. Law enforcement intercepted the suspect aboard the Swatantrata Senani Express, recovering foreign liquor valued at approximately 1.5 lakh rupees. Her brother-in-law, Ishan Kumar, was also implicated and arrested in connection with the same railway operation.
High-value seizure from AC first class coupe
According to police accounts, a joint operation involving the RPF, GRP, and railway CID teams targeted the New Delhi-Darbhanga Swatantrata Senani Express late Friday night. The enforcement squad searched an AC first-class coupe on the train and seized foreign liquor worth around 1.5 lakh rupees from Neha Jha's possession. Along with Jha, her elder sister's husband Ishan Kumar was taken into custody during the raid. Both individuals were formally arrested by the Samastipur GRP and subsequently remanded to judicial custody.

The investigation into the liquor seizure involving Neha Jha has now been transferred to an SIT to uncover the wider network. Authorities are attempting to trace the source of the contraband and dismantle the syndicate operating behind the scenes. The simultaneous arrests of Riya in Patna and Neha in Samastipur have renewed scrutiny regarding the evolving methods employed by bootleggers to bypass enforcement in the dry state.
