Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was relocated from Jantar Mantar by the Delhi Police and admitted to Safdarjung Hospital, is currently in a stable condition. Hospital authorities confirmed on Sunday that while his status is stable, he continues to require round-the-clock medical supervision due to the physiological repercussions stemming from his extended hunger strike.
Official Health Bulletin Updates
The Medical Superintendent of VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital released an official health bulletin regarding his condition. According to the report, Sonam Wangchuk's vital signs are currently stable; however, his blood parameters remain marginally altered. Given the physiological stress and systemic impacts of the prolonged fasting period, doctors have deemed it essential to provide ongoing medical care under the observation of a multidisciplinary team of experts.
Necessity of Sustained Clinical Oversight
A joint assessment conducted by medical professionals from both Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS, New Delhi, has concluded that despite his currently stable clinical status, sustained medical intervention is necessary. The medical team emphasized that continuous monitoring is essential to promptly identify and manage any potential complications that may arise following his fast. The clinical status of the patient, including his blood parameters, is undergoing constant scrutiny by the attending specialists.
Status of Medical Consent
In a formal statement regarding the progress of his health, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare indicated that the family has not yet provided consent for the recommended medical interventions. This comes despite repeated counseling sessions provided by the treating team and an independent expert from AIIMS. The Ministry noted that while efforts to persuade the patient and his family to accept the suggested treatment continue, Sonam Wangchuk remains under close observation.
Background of the Protest
The Delhi Police moved Sonam Wangchuk to the hospital on Saturday morning following a careful, three-layered operation conducted in compliance with High Court orders. This intervention occurred after his hunger strike reached its 21st day on July 18. Before his hospital admission, leaders from various opposition parties visited him at the protest site at Jantar Mantar to express support for his demands while simultaneously urging him to conclude his protest.
