Persistent downpours over the past four days have thrown normal life out of gear across Uttarakhand, swelling rivers and triggering widespread disruptions. The meteorological center in Dehradun has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning across the state for September 4, 2026. Special caution has been advised for six districts in particular, namely Dehradun, Nainital, Champawat, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, and Bageshwar, where intense spells of rain are expected. The continuous wet spell has pushed the risk of landslides and falling boulders to extreme levels, repeatedly blocking vital rural connectivity routes and national highways.
Havoc in Chamoli and Uttarkashi
In the border district of Chamoli, continuous heavy rain for the past 36 hours has caused widespread panic in valleys and townships. Torrential water has washed massive amounts of debris and boulders down from the slopes onto major roads. The situation is particularly grim on the Gopेश्वर-Kund motor route, where thick mud and debris flowing like a river have brought traffic to a complete standstill. Dozens of connecting roads linking remote villages to the district headquarters have been severed, leaving residents stranded and struggling to receive essential supplies. Meanwhile, in Uttarkashi, a sudden hill collapse in Udri village sent massive debris crashing straight into residential settlements, filling several homes with tons of mud and causing substantial financial losses for the local families.
Alerts Across Dehradun and Kumaon Plains
The state capital of Dehradun and the nearby hill station of Mussoorie continue to experience heavy cloud cover and intermittent heavy showers. Waterlogging in low-lying areas and major intersections has severely inconvenienced commuters and school children, while seasonal rivers like Bindal and Rispana are running dangerously high. In the Kumaon region, the Koshi and Gola rivers are flowing close to the danger mark. Following the release of over one hundred thousand cusecs of water from the Banbaasa barrage into the Sharda river, a high alert has been sounded in the Tarai and plain border areas. As a precautionary measure against the severe weather, authorities have ordered all government and private schools in Almora district to remain closed.
Vigilance Along Char Dham Routes and Regional Outlook
Weather conditions remain concerning in Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, and Tehri districts as well. While light drizzles continue in parts of Bageshwar and Pithoragarh, meteorological officials warn of impending heavy downpours, with road closures anticipated in higher reaches such as Dharchula, Munsiyari, and Didihat. In Rudraprayag and Tehri, authorities are keeping a close watch on vulnerable stretches along the Char Dham yatra routes where landslide risks are mounting. Police and State Disaster Response Force teams have been stationed at critical danger zones to clear debris immediately if blockages occur. According to meteorological forecasts, active monsoon conditions are expected to persist across the state until September 7.
