A Fashion Invitation That Ended in Shock
Filmmaker and fashion stylist Riya Anil Kapoor had been invited to the celebrated Met Gala fashion event in New York on April 29. Her entire team made the trip alongside her, including veteran makeup artist Savleen Singh, who has been a trusted member of Riya Anil Kapoor's team for the past 7 years.
Two Pairs of Precious Earrings Rented From Mumbai Jewellers
For this high-profile fashion occasion, two pairs of expensive earrings were taken on rent from two well-known Mumbai-based jewellery houses: Mehta Jewellers and Goenka Jewellers. Savleen Singh kept both jewellery boxes securely in her handbag throughout the journey. The team departed on the night of April 27 at 10:25 PM, boarding an Emirates flight from Mumbai. Flying via Dubai, they touched down at Kennedy Airport, New York, on the evening of April 28 at 5:30 PM, and then checked in to Hotel Pier New York, with each team member heading to their assigned room.
Both Jewellery Boxes Found Completely Empty
Once at the hotel, Savleen Singh opened the jewellery boxes to hand the earrings over to fellow team member Shireen, only to find both boxes entirely empty. The first pair, sourced from Mehta Jewellers, featured panna stone diamonds set in gold and was valued at Rs 66 lakh. The second pair, from Goenka Jewellers, had a Zambian stone with a gold border and was worth Rs 69 lakh. Combined, rented jewellery totalling Rs 1.35 crore had disappeared without a trace.
FIR Registered at Sahar Police Station, Investigation Underway
After returning to Mumbai, Savleen Singh filed a formal complaint at Sahar Police Station. An FIR has been registered against unidentified persons and an investigation is now in progress. Authorities are carefully retracing the complete travel timeline, covering the team's departure from Mumbai airport, the Emirates flight, the Dubai transit stopover, and the journey from Kennedy Airport to Hotel Pier New York. Mumbai Police are working to determine at which precise stage of the trip the earrings were stolen.
