Daily commuters relying on public transport across Mumbai and Pune will soon need to adjust their travel budgets as fare hikes for auto-rickshaws and black-and-yellow (Kali-Peeli) taxis have been approved. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) alongside the Pune Regional Transport Authority has sanctioned the revised tariff structures. Subject to the issuance of official government notifications, these new rates are scheduled to come into effect from 1 September 2026. Until the formal documentation is published, existing transport fares will continue to apply.
Mumbai Auto and Taxi Tariff Revisions Detailed
Under the tariff adjustment approved by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority, auto-rickshaw base fares will increase by ₹1, while black-and-yellow taxi base fares will see an increase of ₹2. For auto-rickshaws, the minimum fare for the initial 1.5-kilometer distance will rise from ₹26 to ₹27. Simultaneously, the minimum fare for black-and-yellow taxis for the first 1.5 kilometers will be adjusted from ₹31 to ₹33.
Beyond the mandatory initial 1.5-kilometer threshold, subsequent per-kilometer charges will also undergo a proportional revision. This means passengers traveling over longer distances will experience a corresponding cumulative increase in their total trip charges.
Rising CNG Prices and Operational Expenses Drive Increase
The primary rationale behind the transport authorities' decision is the steep escalation in operating costs experienced over recent years. Prices of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) have increased noticeably, alongside higher expenditures for spare parts, engine lubricants, and overall vehicle upkeep and servicing.
Transport driver unions had consistently petitioned for a fare restructuring, pointing out that mounting operational costs were severely eroding drivers' daily net earnings and economic viability. Following an in-depth review of these economic pressures, the authority authorized the tariff adjustments to support transport operators while maintaining essential urban transit services.
Decision Pending on Shared Auto and Taxi Tariffs
A substantial portion of the workforce relies on shared auto-rickshaws and shared taxis for last-mile connectivity between railway stations and commercial hubs. While upward adjustments for shared transit options are under consideration, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) has not yet finalized or announced the updated shared fare structure. The new shared transit pricing will be clarified once formal deliberations conclude.
Pune Transport Authority Approves Substantial Auto Fare Increase
Parallel to the changes in Mumbai, auto-rickshaw rides in Pune will also become costlier starting 1 September 2026. The Pune Regional Transport Authority has granted approval for an updated pricing chart, under which the minimum fare for the first 1.5 kilometers will rise to ₹30, up from the current ₹25.
Furthermore, the per-kilometer rate charged after the initial 1.5-kilometer distance will increase from ₹17 to ₹20. Consequently, residents and daily commuters throughout Pune will face higher commuting costs across all short and long auto routes starting next month.
