Domestic carrier SpiceJet is facing heightened regulatory pressure following persistent operational hurdles and recurring flight delays. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has initiated a comprehensive review of the airline's day-to-day operations and financial stability. The regulatory scrutiny seeks to confirm that safety protocols remain fully uncompromised while shielding passengers from persistent transit disruptions across its network.
Passenger Protection and Regulatory Oversight
Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu stated on Tuesday that passenger safety and the prevention of travel inconvenience remain the government's foremost priorities. Naidu explained that DGCA is conducting an operational assessment of SpiceJet along with a review of its financial standing. While the civil aviation ministry remains in active dialogue with the carrier's management, the minister pointed out that the administration has clear regulatory boundaries when it comes to intervening in the internal day-to-day affairs of a private airline.
Steep Decline in Domestic Market Share
Official records highlight a sharp contraction in SpiceJet's presence within the Indian domestic aviation market over recent months. In February, the airline commanded a 3.9% domestic market share, which shrank to 1.9% by June. The downward trend deepened in July, when its market share slipped further to 1.6%. Alongside the shrinking market footprint, the airline has been contending with internal liquidity constraints, leading to salary payment delays, with reports indicating that several staff members have not received compensation since May.
Credit Support of ₹150 Crore Under ECLGS
To help carriers weather external economic pressures, the central government broadened the scope of the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme. Naidu confirmed that SpiceJet received assistance amounting to ₹150 crore under ECLGS, an initiative expanded to support airlines impacted by regional turmoil arising from the West Asia crisis. The objective remains keeping flight networks operational, protecting travelers from sudden cancellations, and maintaining industry stability.
Fleet Expansion with 20 Leased Aircraft
In an effort to counter capacity constraints and stabilize its flight schedule, SpiceJet has outlined plans to expand its operational fleet ahead of the peak winter travel window. On September 3, the company finalized lease arrangements with three separate aircraft operators. Under these agreements, the airline intends to induct 20 planes into service for the winter schedule, comprising 15 Boeing and 5 Airbus aircraft, aimed at restoring schedule reliability and flight capacity.
