A remarkable breakthrough has emerged in the agricultural landscape of Bihar, where a fruit traditionally associated with hilly and cool regions has now successfully taken root in the plains. Researchers at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University in Pusa have achieved a major milestone by successfully cultivating avocado, widely known as butter fruit, in Samastipur. This unprecedented agricultural feat has proven that with dedicated scientific effort, even exotic crops can be adapted to new environments, opening up promising avenues for local growers.
A Powerhouse of Nutrition and Flavor
The significance of the avocado extends far beyond its exotic status or high market value, as it serves as an exceptional source of dietary fiber, protein, and essential vitamins. It is also packed with vital minerals including potassium, folate, and vitamin E, which contribute significantly to overall health. Its creamy texture and distinct taste set it apart from ordinary fruits, driving massive consumer demand. These unique nutritional and commercial qualities make it a highly lucrative, high-value horticultural crop for modern farmers looking to diversify their income.
The Research Journey Began in 2023
University scientists initiated the experimental cultivation of the crop back in September 2023, facing the primary challenge of adapting the sensitive plant to the intense summer heat, high humidity, heavy rainfall, and fluctuating temperatures characteristic of north Bihar. To ensure successful fruit set, researchers inter-planted the Type-A variety Arka Supreme with the Type-B variety Arka Ravi to facilitate optimal cross-pollination. Throughout the experimental phase, specialized cultivation protocols were formulated keeping local climatic conditions and plant requirements in careful balance.
Overcoming Waterlogging Challenges in the Plains
One of the most formidable obstacles in cultivating this crop in Bihar is the frequent occurrence of waterlogging during the monsoon season. Avocado roots are exceptionally sensitive to prolonged exposure to standing water and are prone to rotting. To counter this, university experts designed specialized management techniques tailored for plain terrains. Instead of planting on flat ground, saplings were arranged on elevated ridges and raised beds. Furthermore, modern agricultural practices such as drip micro-irrigation and basin mulching were integrated to maintain optimal soil moisture.
Impressive Yields and High Market Valuation
Data gathered from the two-and-a-half-year-old orchard have significantly boosted the confidence of the research team. Fruit weights ranging between 750 to 950 grams were recorded for the Arka Supreme variety. According to university assessments, biochemical and sensory evaluations confirmed that the taste and buttery texture of the locally grown fruit matched or even surpassed imported varieties. At the farm gate, the average price is estimated at around 400 rupees per kilogram, while premium retail markets in metropolitan cities can command prices reaching up to 1500 rupees per kilogram.
A New Horizon for Regional Farmers
University Vice-Chancellor Dr. P. S. Pandey hailed this achievement as a landmark moment for the agricultural sector in the region. Fruit scientist Dr. आशीष पांडा noted that cultivating the fruit in the plains yielded outcomes superior to initial expectations. Following regulatory evaluations and formal variety release protocols, commercial distribution of saplings to farmers will commence. If implemented on a large scale, this initiative could provide farmers in the region with a lucrative alternative to traditional farming models.
